1987 Opel Manta 400 replica 2.0 GTE

Summary:

Brilliant, affordable classic. Getting scarce

Faults:

After modifying the car, fitted the 400 kit and painted it white with red decals.

Fitted an original 14000 mile engine, which is bulletproof. My plan is to change it out for an XE sometime.

Rear disc brake upgrade and Volvo 4 pots fitted to the front.

No gearbox or axle faults.

General Comments:

Great car for the summer. I like to spectate at rally events, and the car always gets some nice feedback.

Getting ready for MoT at the end of this week. Plan to have her on the road for May.

This car was being built when I posted about the dolphin grey car above. Currently building a V8 Mantzel Manta since 2005...

1987 Opel Manta Exclusive 2.0

Summary:

Classy modern day sports on a budget

Faults:

Fog Lamp switch failed due to earthing problem.

Headlamp wiring faulty causing one lamp to be out on dipped beam.

Sticking Brake caliper at the front although not surprising as it has stood for 4 years.

General Comments:

Fantastic looking motor that still turns heads and looks great.

Basic, but well put together including excellent rear wheel drive.

Engine has lots pf Torque with great acceleration and smooth power delivery.

Roofs tend to rot if they have the optional sunroof. Also they rust under the battery compartment with water ingress.

Interior Recaro seats give good support.

Not much room for a modern radio as the depth behind the dash is 6 inches - whereas my Kenwood single slot is 6.5 inches.

Exclusives last of the line give fabulous Classic motoring on a budget - great UK owners club.

1987 Opel Manta GTE 2.0

Summary:

Fun

Faults:

Things only go wrong after I try to make the car better!

Battery failed completely.

Front brake calipers found seized when changing discs and pads.

Car fills with condensation frequently.

Bad earth caused poor starting.

General Comments:

Damn cheap to buy - £375. After some work now worth £600!

Getting parts is easy as there are many cars still being broken for spares.

Club support is useful.

Handles nicely, decent performance but no firecracker.

A very good comment on the best car around! I'm only 15, but I've just done up a Ford Orion and am going to sell it it to buy a Manta GT/E. I love them, my dad's previously had a couple. Keep them living!
