1990 Porsche 944 S2 3.0 litre

Summary:

Fantastic. Wish I could afford a newer Porsche

Faults:

Very little hassle with this car.

The electric tailgate release mechanism was a little temperamental. It used to seize up in winter.

The drainage holes in the rear spoiler got blocked. The water built up then leaked into the car. This was cured by periodic clearing of debris from the spoiler!

I think I had the brake pads changed and the window wiper blades renewed.

General Comments:

This car is fast. The torque, acceleration and handling are better than in any car I have owned previously or since.

The interior is rather spartan and gloomy compared to more modern vehicles. This you can live with.

The galvanized bodywork is a god-send in Britain, where the gritting of roads with salt plays havoc with cars of inferior construction.

1990 Porsche 944 S2 Cabriolet 3 litre

Summary:

The best value super-car for the money

Faults:

Battery weak if left for any length of time. Otherwise this has had virtually nothing wrong in the entire time that I have owned it.

General Comments:

Owning a Porsche is never cheap, but the 944 is the exception to the rule.

Everything simply works and is reliable - what more could you want in a car?

1990 Porsche 944 S2 cabriolet 3.0

Summary:

A high performance bargain

Faults:

Several things though no show stoppers and not bad considering the age and performance...

Front wishbones (normal wear and tear) @ £700 fitted each!

Whine from gearbox @ £800 (also fixed 2nd gear synchro).

Overheating due to rad temp sensor for fan failing in the summer which then made the thermostat fail.

Sticking electric windows - still a problem!

Almost snapped cam belt - several teeth missing, but still hanging in there somehow!!! DO NOT FIT A CHEAP ONE.

General Comments:

Superb looks - does not look 14 years old!

No signs of any rot.

Excellent performance - engine totally reliable.

Surprisingly good handling - shame on 911 owners!

Dull German cabin.

1990 Porsche 944 S2 3.0 16v

Summary:

Cracking drive for the cash - hard to beat

Faults:

Timing chain 110K miles.

General Comments:

I got it very cheap, because it had been severely neglected by the previous owner and have painstakingly renovated the car over the last 3 years, to the point where only the final cosmetic stuff needs done. Other than that it has run well and been very, very reliable for a 12 year old car.
