1994 Seat Ibiza CLX 1.9 diesel

Summary:

A very good reliable car

Faults:

The fan belt had snapped and cost me £11 (a hell of a job to fit!!).

Battery went flat.

CD player is playing up.

1 of the blowers sometimes works.

Rear bulbs went.

1 small wear in the seat.

General Comments:

My Seat is good from 0 to 30 mph, and from 30 to 60mph, but bad from 0 to 60mph. It drives well and all ways starts on the button.

The clutch is a bit sticky, as well as the brakes.

It's a bit noisy on start up, but very quiet for a 14 year old car with 148,000 miles on the clock!!

I cleaned the engine and I'm going to give it a service soon.

There is rust, but I have treated it.

It handles very well.

The interior could be better.

1994 Seat Ibiza S 1.6

Summary:

Fun car, excellent value

Faults:

This car has been very reliable for year. It's all Volkswagen parts; engine, interior and parts.

It's been driven hard, but all was well till recently. The transmission whine, it's louder, and it's had a new clutch and clutch cable at 102000 miles.

After one and a half years of ownership, recently it's needed a new bushes on the suspension and a head gasket needed replacing, as it was leaking from a corner, but the engine is excellent for the mileage. It's to be expected as it's never been changed before. Very reliable.

General Comments:

It is torquey for only 80 bhp in 1.6 engine, but not that quick; 0-60 about 11 seconds.

Handles great. Mine's lowered on Gmax springs and shocks. It did handle bad until bushes were replaced on top on the shocks.

This car is as good as a Volkswagen Polo; same car, but rarer eye catcher. Mine's metallic green, lowered, white Compomotive rally wheels, Lexus lights, looks like a GTI.

Bodywork is poor on early Seats; lots of rust on the sills and door corners, but they're all the same I've read.

I only paid £1000 one and a half years ago; hardly lost any value.

1994 Seat Ibiza Impact 1.4 petrol

Summary:

Dead - after 128000 miles

Faults:

Head gasket went at 128000 (unfix-able)

Minor rust spots.

Rust on sills.

Seats have been covered due to grotty ness.

General Comments:

Seemed to handle it's old age well, even after it's last owner had run it into the ground, driving around Europe.

After I was given the car by the previous abusive owner, I attempted to coax it back to life with a good service.

This seemed successful, and it served well for a year with no problems, and was a great drive.

Head gasket went (around 128000).

Proved uneconomical to fix, lots of parts on the engine were corroding, and it proved too much effort to get the exhaust manifold nuts off (confirmed by a mechanic).

As the car only cost me a few hundred pounds, it was scrapped after a long life.

1994 Seat Ibiza Salsa 1.4 petrol Injection

Summary:

Very reliable and well built car

Faults:

Rear bearing needed replacing about 80'000

Rear section of the exhaust replaced at about 65'000.

General Comments:

We have had this car from new in 1994 and covered some 95'000 miles in it.

I use it regularly on motorway journeys (daily) for about 100 miles and alternate between a 24v Senator and the Ibiza 1.4.

Considering the difference in engine sizes, the Seat copes remarkably well at upto 90mph.

Consumption is not bad without being excellent.

Not a spot of rust anywhere, the only criticism would be the seats are a little hard, but therefore don't go all saggy and the boot lid seems to be filled with a grease that runs down the bumper when the weather gets hot and stains it.

1994 Seat Ibiza CLX 1.4 petrol

Summary:

A reliable small runabout - good second car for a family

Faults:

Car bought from a local Seat dealer with a 1 year warranty.

Water leak into boot was fixed under warranty, otherwise nothing else has gone wrong.

General Comments:

Car is reasonably nippy for a 1.4, if a little noisy.

Economy is not so good if driven hard or around town - about 37/38 mpg.

A lot of interior space.

Not easy to service yourself - you have to remove the complete air filter assembly to change the plugs - obviously designed for dealer service!

Build quality is good - it's basically a VW Polo but cheaper!!
