I have a 2000 Fabia 1.4mpi. It was 3 year old when I bought it and 24,000 on the clock. The engine not running smooth; that you described sounds like a problem I had, my car has 70,000 on it. The problem is caused by the timing chain and the sprockets that it runs on being worn. Find a good mechanic and get him to replace the timing chain and the sprockets, and I guarantee your engine will run smooth like new. Mine is like a new car, couldn't believe the difference it made.

Just bought an MPi 1.4 8v 2003, with 42,000 miles on it. Idles between 900 and 1000, bit wavy. How much did the timing chain cost you to replace?

2000 Skoda Fabia Comfort 1.4 16v

Summary:

A great car

Faults:

Air-con not effective from delivery (as delivered in December took many months to find this out, needed re-programming.

Intermittent squeak from rear brake, dealer wanted to charge for £100 fixing as wear and tear, queried this at 15,000 miles.

Nothing else went wrong during warranty.

Broke mirror adjuster (beware - seems fragile, needed whole switch).

Occasional intermittent rumbling from rear brakes – something trapped?

Engine warning light came on one week after warranty expired, seemed to run OK, temperature sensor replaced.

Rattle from rear seat back – adjusted rubber stop.

Now squeak at top middle of dashboard, does it when going along and when a little up or down pressure on steering wheel, stops when area pressed in gently (any ideas how to cure).

Only other failure – one light bulb.

Still on original wipers.

General Comments:

Good performance, handling, ride, equipment value, economy.

Many passengers comment on it being comfortable, spacious.

Got used to throttle delay, makes for a smother reaction to accelerator movement.

Had problems with one dealer. Took in for repair, had forgotten to order part. At 4 year service did not do brake fluid change (noticed as not charged for fluid). When took back for this to be done given back with brake pedal going to floor if pressed for 15 seconds.

2000 Skoda Fabia Classic 1.4 8v

Summary:

OK for small 2nd family car, but waiting for probably inevitable faults!!

Faults:

Power steering warning light came on while driving, only once, and went off again. Car is pulling to left. Unsure if this is a power steering problem. Has anyone else experienced problems with car pulling to left?

Irritating not having tailgate lock on tailgate and having to use in-car lever to open tailgate. Is there anyway tailgate can be converted so that it can be opened/locked from outside? My Classic model has central locking.

General Comments:

Poor acceleration, probably due to drive by wire system. Slow to overtake.

Good build quality, solid controls, no problems. No excessive road/engine noise.

Plenty of room in the back for 2-3 adults. Dash could be improved with soft touch plastics.

Driving position fine and adjustable.

2000 Skoda Fabia Classic 1.4

Almost everthing possible.

Rear windscreen heater failure.

Coolant leaks.

Rear windscreen wash/wipe pipes leaking.

Faulty headrests.

Front anti-roll bar wearing out rubber bushes (sockets) causing rattling.

Broken wheel trims and dent when we picked it up.

Lose fascia on back doors.

Problems with power steering alarm.

Water pump failure.

Constant engine whining.

Front wheel tracking problems. Causing bill for realingnment and new tyres.

Jamming drives window.

Problems with the ECU.

There are a few more things, but I'll leave it at that, because I can't remember them all.

General Comments:

Unbelelievably we bought this car from a Skoda dealer.

The car performs well a general rule of thumb, its just that things keep wrong.

The service we have received from our dealer has also been dire.

Another strange thing that we have just discovered is a mysterious problem with the mileage. When we put down our deposit and the car was ours the mileage was 24169, however when the service was done a month later, one day before we picked it up the mileage was 24448, a difference of 279 miles done between the time of purchase and time of picking it up.
