1993 Skoda Favorit GLXi 1.3i petrol

Summary:

An excellent cheap runabout

Faults:

Rear wash wipe has stopped working.

Rev counter only works when it feels like it.

Light switch has gone.

General Comments:

This is a seriously nice car to drive and it has bags of character!

The car accelerates quite well for the size.

The GLXi is much more refined than earlier models. Try to pick one up from '93 onwards for a good buy.

1993 Skoda Favorit GLXi 1.3i petrol

Summary:

Stunning value for money for an understated car!

Faults:

Faulty cooling system: radiator fan switch, thermostat, heater control valve. A complete cooling system overhaul at the local dealer cost £55 with all new parts! Worth it on any Favorit or the head gasket will go!

Rear window demister- book a date in your diary if you want to see behind you- takes 20 minutes to clear!

Alloy wheels are too soft, and scuff very easily.

Otherwise extremely reliable.

General Comments:

Get a fuel injected one from 93 on. (VW had more of an impact on these.) These have the nicer interior and more refined engine and ride. The older ones aren't screwed together as well, and are very old fashioned to look at inside and out. Without fuel injection, the timing can go quickly. To 93, all engines are 54 bhp which is sufficient, but go for the later 64 bhp ones, as they'll embarrass even the 1.4 Fiesta, Corsas and Escorts etc. The newer ones also have 'E' badging with a nicer centre console, central locking etc.

Extremely reliable, but only if serviced properly. My local dealer charges less than £90 for an all in, everything done annual service and MOT! Bet you can't beat that!

The Favorit is a nice, understated car that's nippy, and returns over 40 mpg! Cheap to run! What more do you want!?

1993 Skoda Favorit GLXI Estate 1.3 petrol

Faults:

Loose handbrake warning indicator switch. Usual dodgy rear demister. Slight internal rust on rear hatch below window.

General Comments:

1. Generally good.

2. Very good engine apart from awful reverse, tends to faulter on even the slightest of gradients.

3. For an estate, it does perhaps need to be slightly more powerful at times especially when loaded.

4. Road handling is superb.

5. Internal heating is slow.

6. Continuous rear window wiper would be useful rather than the occasional wipe when requested.
