1998 Toyota Hiace Powervan 2.5 diesel

Summary:

You couldn't get any van as good

Faults:

Battery died a couple of years ago.

The brake light bulb (driver's side) blows every year.

As you can see from above, in 10 years nothing mechanically has gone wrong.

General Comments:

The only thing I can say about the Hi-ace is the fuel consumption is bad; otherwise the best van anyone can get.

1996 Toyota Hiace 2.4 d

Summary:

Good, but not as good as they used to be

Faults:

Heater matrix has begun to leak badly - I have bypassed it to avoid a dash out job. Will leave it like that till winter.

Radiator has begun to leak, will need to be replaced.

Heater plugs are wrung off in head - probably due to muppet previous owner.

General sloppiness in steering and bushes.

General Comments:

Tough and reliable van, but not as tough and reliable as the earlier pre 95 model - they are the best van ever made and will run forever. I am sorry I changed.

I work the van hard, but it does not pull as well as a Mitsubishi l400, although it is more economical.

The older model was a better built and much more substantial van mechanically - one look at the new style diff. will tell you that. The older model was more economical and never once let me down, despite getting dogs abuse.

This is a softer van and not everlasting, but will still outlast any Ford or french offering!

1987 Toyota Hiace Van. SWB 2.4lt

Summary:

A Magnificent Piece of Engineering Thank You Toyota

Faults:

Torsion Bar Broke away from body on its on its first Doe, maybe the test was far too heavy. That was about ten years ago. It was repaired and I never had to replace it since. I had a problem with a cracked cylinder head at about 95000 miles and I had a reconditioned one fitted and also had a sleeve fitted to a cylinder. The van is still going well.

General Comments:

This Van has only broken down once in the past 16 years. I have used it every day and it never lets me down.

I remember these vans had a somewhat legendary reputation in the small shop stock / deliveries market back in the day. Cousin-in-law had one with 200 K on it still going strong!
