1999 Toyota Yaris Terra 1.0

Summary:

Great reliable car to date

Faults:

Nothing really... apart from the re-call which was to do with brakes.

Often the radio volume switch does not work. To increase volume you have to turn the switch anti-clockwise first then turn it clockwise.

Rattle from the front windows when half down.

General Comments:

Engine/wind noise at speeds above 50mph. Radio has to be turned up to compensate and then turned down when the car is stationary.

Small boot even when the rear seats are moved forward.

Very refined and well built car (built in Japan, Yaris for the European market is to be built in Paris in 2001. Will quality suffer?)

Great road-holder for its size.

Loads of storage compartments.

In relation to your question about quality problems with the new French built Yaris, I can say that it's been mix and match. Generally speaking they are extremely well built, not as good as the Japanese ones, but still a hell of a lot better that the likes of other French assembled cars, such as Peugeot, Citroen etc. Having said that I have came across a one week old French Yaris that had a piston ring break and score the inside of one of the cylinders, causing loss of compression. The short block and cylinder head had to be replaced, under warranty of course. Interestingly enough the engine itself is built in England, not France... It is only the 1.0 car that is being assembled in France. The 1.3 and 1.5 T-Sport are still being built in Japan.

Thanks for the comment of the last guy.

I am considering buying a t sport and was worried about the british /french shoddy build and am really glad the t sport is built in japan. should think so too for £12,000.

Can I ask where you got your insurance through? I am considering buying this model used, but because it isn't a UK spec model I can't seem to get an insurance quote.

1999 Toyota Yaris GS 1.0 petrol

Summary:

An outstanding small car

Faults:

The combined radio and clock was faulty from day one. Toyota knew about this and replaced it under warranty.

Aside of that, nothing else has gone wrong.

General Comments:

Dealer service is excellent.

The gearbox is light but very notchy. It does improve on a long journey.

Accomodation front and rear is superb.

Fuel is sipped. 50mpg is not uncommon.

The digital instruments work efficiently and are a talking point for anyone unfamiliar with the vehicle.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Don't Know
