2012 Volkswagen Caddy C20 1.6 TDi

Summary:

Nice van

Faults:

Glow plugs, injectors, plus all the usual wear and tear of age and miles.

General Comments:

Good looking, smart, comfy, the Caddy is a nice all round small van.

Other than those injectors (expensive and annoying common fault on early 1.6 TDi's), the 1.6 diesel has been reliable. Good power and always around 50 mpg.

Plenty of space.

Reasonable business insurance and costs. Services have been cheap and at MOT time the van usually passes inspections no problems.

Recommended, but only buy a well looked after van, things get expensive on abused vans.

2006 Volkswagen Caddy STDi 2.0L diesel

Summary:

A nice car to drive with heaps of style

Faults:

Mostly all things connected to the wheels and suspension have been replaced lots of times; mostly the drop bars and CV joints need replacing every year.

The engine itself is great.

The gearbox is a nightmare, as is the auto door lock system, but I still love it for the level of comfort and style.

General Comments:

Very economic engine. Great for people who spend 8 hours a day driving.

The main bugbear is the CV joints.

2005 Volkswagen Caddy Life 1.6 diesel

Summary:

Happy out with it!

Faults:

Things falling off.

Hooks breaking & electric windows get stuck easily.

Other than that, all good!

General Comments:

Very good for a disabled car. A cheap alternative compared to its disabled friendly rivals such as the Fiat Doblo, Chrysler Voyager or Citroen C8.

1998 Volkswagen Caddy SD 1.9 diesel

Summary:

Reliable and cheap to run

Faults:

Nothing proper servicing won't catch.

General Comments:

Very reliable van, a bit slow with only 64 bhp.

Good load capacity, and towing doesn't make much difference to performance.

Does suffer in its twilight years with engine management and gear/clutch trouble, but still driveable.

Watch out for rust.

Comfortable over long drives.

Not very safe; I was in one that was hit head on at 50mph, and it crumpled like a paper cup.

Economical on the diesel, and parts are available.
