1983 Volkswagen Golf GL 1.5 Carb

Summary:

Brilliant, I will never sell it!

Faults:

Needed new water pump at 61000 miles.

Needed new rear wheel bearing at 61000 miles.

Needed general servicing at 65000 miles.

And again at 75000 miles, including oil change and filter, new HT leads, new points, distributor cap etc.

General Comments:

It is very quick considering it is only a 1500cc.

It is in pretty much mint condition and was a real bargain.

Its still a real head-turner as well.

1983 Volkswagen Golf GL Cabriolet 1.8

Summary:

Good Mk1 Golf Cabrio 1983 ;-)

Faults:

Bought the Golf Cabrio from Germany LHD as a project, so lots of new parts.

General Comments:

The 1.8 cabriolet is a great little car. I've got the Weber conversion on it; pulls really well and is good for overtaking.

Slight body "roll", but they are all like that.

MPG not that good at around 20 MPG around town.

1983 Volkswagen Golf Gran Tourismo Iniezione was 1.8, now 2.0 8v!

Summary:

The 'Original' car

Faults:

Not a whole lot! Handbrake cable snapped once.

Leaks oil round cam cover if taken above 6000RPM (Surprise! Modified 2.0 litre engine requires better crankcase breathing I think).

Oil drops onto air filter element from breather system - probably because of larger cubic capacity combined with downhill slope to air filter.

Wiring problem (Smoke emanating from dash) only possible cause is complete rewire with 2nd hand Scirocco loom prior to my ownership.

Chewed up a 1.6 gearbox - Not strictly the cars fault!

A little too much under steer under Power (Again - Surprise?!).

General Comments:

The example comment: 'This car is seriously quick and handles like it's on rails.' Covers most of it.

Apart from that, it is a gloriously simple vehicle, Barely a compromise and right first time from VW!

Small and light = Fast and nimble.

Parts for very many older VW's have become a LOT cheaper since independents announced price drops in about 1999 +/- a few.

Highly desirable - Esp my Campaign model! But all models of Mk1 Golf are now sought after.

This really is the best thing since... Horses (lol)

1983 Volkswagen Golf Mark 1 1.6 diesel

Summary:

A women magnet

Faults:

Needed new head gasket after 150,000 miles due to an oil leak.

New exhaust system @ 130,000 miles.

2 new shocks due to excessive pot holes on my road.

General Comments:

Very good, clean car. Economical and cheap to run, and easy to keep clean (look really nice when polished). Still runs very sweetly. I myself service it every 3,500 miles.

1983 Volkswagen Golf Mk1 GTi 1.8

Summary:

Simply one of the best cars ever made. Learn how to maintain this car and it will last forever

Faults:

The previous owner of this restored Mk1 did a great job of maintaining the car. The only problem I have had so far is the mounts on the rear exhaust silencer breaking, resulting in the exhaust system becoming bent.

General Comments:

Excellent motor, I actually sold my Mk3 Golf to buy one of these. My car was bought fully restored and it really turns many heads. I get so many people complimenting the car. The original 8 valve engine still sounds great and goes like a rocket! Leaves many of todays modern hot hatches way behind.

When I first went to pick the car up, I wasn't expecting it to be all that quick due to its age etc. But I was seriously shocked with the amount of grunt the car had. Handles excellently (on Konis), looks great (resprayed, chrome alloys).

You would not want to buy a Mk1 Golf GTi as a comfortable or luxurious car, the whole point of having one of these is for the feedback you get from the steering wheel, the go-kart handling and being able to see the whole bonnet in front of you from the drivers seat.

The main reason for me buying this car is simply because it is very light, and any 4/6 cylinder VAG engine can fit in it giving it the potential to slay Porshes. It also does not have all todays electronic gadgets and advanced ECU's, which when they mess up, are costly to repair.

Very well put, totally agree with this man, my 1990 gti cabby goes like stink and is so reliable and car is an icon.
