1984 Volkswagen Golf GTi 8v

Summary:

Very reliable, economical and fast

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

Revision of the original (and probably best) mk1 Golf GTi, gorgeous looks and interior (black/grey/red).

Fast, but not extremely fast. Handles well, but probably not as go-kart like as the mk1. Ideal for the motorway.

Very few things go wrong with these cars.

1984 Volkswagen Golf GTi 1.8 petrol

Summary:

A high performance bargain and reliable

Faults:

Only the battery going flat which I have changed.

Most problems were there when I got it, dodgy rev counter and water temp gauges, rear window heater strips not working, driver door falling a bit when open, driver seat tatty and the gear linkage being dodgy.

General Comments:

Very fast car, nice engine sound, really deep and involving.

Economical - first check I got 41 mpg, good on a motorway cruise at 70/80 in 5th at low revs.

Very good handling, a bargain at £500.

1984 Volkswagen Golf GTi 8V 1.8 petrol

Summary:

Excellent fun. Recommended

Faults:

Many things needed renewing/replacing but this was due to the age of the car eg. steering rack, rear wheels bearings, exhaust manifold gasket, difficult getting 1st and 2nd gear.

General Comments:

Excellent chassis, perfect handling, the best car I've owned for driver involvement. Would have another one any day, but a bit slow by modern standards in unmodified format.

Sadly the insurance companies aren't too keen on them.

1984 Volkswagen Golf GTi Convertible 1.8 injection petrol

Faults:

Alternator needing replacement after 14 years.

Rust in the top of the fuel pipe falling into the fuel tank and causing the 2 fuel pumps to get clogged, overheat and fail - remedied by new fuel pipe and pumps - this is problem common to all Golf Convertibles where water drips down from the hood.

General Comments:

Considering the age of the car, the build quality, performance and handling are superb for a car of its vintage. The body work is very good and the doors close with a solid clunk! The engine just goes on forever and has enough torque to pull from most gears without labouring. The car can be run on unleaded every other tank full without conversion.
