1999 Volkswagen Golf GTi Turbo 1.8

Summary:

Superior build quality, Good looks, Amazing performance

Faults:

I have not experienced any major problems with my Golf at the moment except for the suspension, it's fairly hard.

General Comments:

This car has great styling and solid bodywork. the metalic black paintwork gives the car a great shine.

The recaro sport seats are very comfortable and the luminous blue interior lighting is unique from other cars. The standard sound is awesome producing great output.

What I like best about my Golf is the performance, it is very impressive as the turbo produces to give the car awesome pick up and also has good top end too.

It is rather expensive on fuel, but can't complain because of the performance it provides.

1999 Volkswagen Golf S 1.6 petrol

Summary:

Easily broke into expensive to repair

Faults:

It appears to be common knowledge to the criminal fraternity and Volkswagon alike that thier cars are very easily broken into.

Volkswagon cause more damage to the car (at your cost) repairing the damage.

Only main dealers are allowed by Volkswagon to sell the parts needed for said repair.

Main dealers do not carry the said parts in stock.

Approximate time needed to sauce said parts, two weeks.

Your vehicle remains unsecured for a period of approximately two weeks.

Volkswagon quote one day as time needed to carry out said repair. Which in actual fact takes two.

The total cost to you approximately £400.

General Comments:

Prior to purchasing my vehicle I received reasonably good service from VW, since I have only experienced bad service wherever I've been.

Whenever I have had to purchase parts for my Golf I always feel completely ripped off.

I have always driven Volkswagon although my current car is up for sale. This shall be my last Volkswagon I will never buy one again.

Volkswagon product, service and brand name is no longer anything for anyone to be proud of.

It's common knowledge that you can open the central locking on a Golf by inserting a level through the drivers side window rubber seal. Mostly, you can't drive the car away because of the immobiliser. VW have known this for about 3 years and haven't changed the design.

The SE versions are slightly better than the S models because they have a better alarm system.

VW's attitude to this problem is disgraceful as it is to the other big known problems with the Mk4 Golf e.g. the tendency to pull to the left permanently and the coil problems on the 1.8 Turbo engine. Once you have got a Golf you are on your own. Caveat Emptor (buyer beware).

We're getting rid of our Golf this year because of a number of problems and general poor build quality. We were going to get a Passat, but the attitude of the dealers and Volkswagen UK was such that we're buying a Saab instead.

1999 Volkswagen Golf S 2.0

Summary:

Very disappointed with both the car and the dealers

Faults:

Wipers.

Small irritating electrical faults.

Suspension rattles and knocks.

Rain leaks in through door seals.

Interior trim fell off in footwell.

Alarm packed in.

Interior rattles.

Door hinges.

Engine management system failed.

Drinks oil (dealer says this is not a problem!)

General Comments:

Bought this as an ex-demo from dealer. It has been back so often they think I'm one of the staff. Have lost count of the number of visits.

Lots of niggly faults. Dealer can't do anything right first time except write out large invoices. Wipers noisy on all speeds and several annoying electrical faults. To be fair they eventually manage to fix most things.

Handling pretty mediocre. Wallows and rolls badly. My Mondeo went round corners much better. Suspension knocks fixed under warranty.

Door seals replaced twice, but still leak in heavy rain when on the motorway. Dealer says it is a common problem. Doors creak and groan.

Went for a Golf because of the alleged build quality and reliability. What a mistake. Should have stuck to Ford.
