1994 Volkswagen Passat CL Estate 1.9 TDi

Summary:

Best I ever had

Faults:

Mostly wear and tear stuff. No major problems.

General Comments:

Very 1990s and a very solid and simple car, this Passat estate has done me well for many years.

Good to drive, quiet and smooth on motorway. A bit noisy clattering around town with that diesel engine.

Performance was just acceptable. But it did do around 50 mpg; you won't get any better than that for its time.

CL model a bit basic, go for a GL if you can.

Spacious, huge car inside. Comfy seats. Exterior was OK looking. Mine was blue, and the first of the newer B4 models for 1994 I think after the B3 shape.

Just a great car that lasted many miles and rarely gave trouble, I do miss VW's of this time.

1994 Volkswagen Passat GL 2.0 petrol

Summary:

Typical solid 90s VW

Faults:

New wheel bearings and brakes all round was its most expensive cost to me at one point.

Other than that, minor niggles - normal wear and tear, a faulty indicator relay switch, and a leaking sunroof fixed by myself.

Engine had a slight oil leak near the time I got rid of it; it was only the rocker cover though, so no big deal, and that was acceptable at the age and mileage.

General Comments:

A vastly underrated car that during its time was a face lifted Passat that was only made for a couple of years before changing to the more modern 1996 model that was an all new car. This 1994 model however was a good update to the previous model, and in the 7 years I had it put well over 100,000 miles on it trouble free. Reliability was excellent and never broke down once. The faults/wear listed above were all taken care of at services/MOTs, so no trips to the garage. I know people with new cars that even in this current year of 2016 still make trips to the dealer for faults/recalls on their relatively new cars.

Smooth and comfortable to drive, typically 90s VW inside with hard wearing interior that still looked fresh after all those years and mileage. Cosmetically on the outside it looked great - little to no rust spots, and mine was bright red with big alloy wheels. This was a well equipped car with electric windows and all the usual stuff that worked perfectly.

Overall an excellent car that I only sold in back in 2007 due to circumstances at the time. I know the guy I sold it to, and from what I hear, it's still going strong!

1994 Volkswagen Passat CL 1.9 TDi

Summary:

Cheap, but bland motoring!

Faults:

Rear wheel bearing failed, causing brake to dismantle and wheel to become detached!

New rear shock absorbers at 98000 miles.

Front brake disks replaced at 100000 miles.

New battery. Would not start on cold winter morning.

General Comments:

A very good car, and so cheap to run. Diesel engine does silly mpgs. I have managed 44 to 57mpg. The fuel tank is huge, and can do over 800 miles on the motorway at 70mph or so! Impressive for such a big girl!

The wheel falling off was worrying! If you hear it squeaking STOP! Everything else that has gone wrong is to be expected as it has done 100,000 miles.

There is no rust on the bodywork.

The interior feels solid, and the rear leg room is massive!
