2000 Volkswagen Passat Sport 1.9 TDI (90)

Summary:

Best old car you can buy, fact

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

Best car I've ever owned, considering that I only paid 500 euro for it, and now I have had it 2 years with over 200k on it, and nothing has gone wrong with it. That must say something about the older shape B5 Passats.

I have heard people saying ohh you should have purchased a Honda or a Toyota, they're much better, but all I can say to them is these Passats are much better than the older Toyotas of that time; they have a better quality interior, and the old 1.9 TDI engine is by far the most reliable engine Volkswagen ever made; to this day it's bulletproof.

I service it every 5k, and it's still going like a dream, and for a car with such high miles, it drives like new. All it needed to pass the NCT was tyres and that was it.

If you are reading this and are thinking of getting a Passat, just get one and service it, and it will last longer that almost any car on the road today.

2000 Volkswagen Passat Comfort 1.6 petrol

Faults:

Had to replace the CV joints, timing belt and engine hoses. For a year, I was experiencing stalling when braking at low speeds, this was due to a faulty airflow sensor. The car also drank oil by the bucket load.

General Comments:

Although the 1.6 Passat wasn't the quickest in a straight line, it was very comfortable, like a sofa on wheels.

The road handling through corners was brilliant, and the built quality was excellent. In the end, I traded it in for a Golf GTI.

2000 Volkswagen Passat Tdi Sport 1.9 turbo diesel

Summary:

I'd buy another

Faults:

Air bag fault in steering wheel at 70,000miles.

Flat spot in power at 3000rpm, form 50,000 miles on - can't find a fault.

General Comments:

Very comfortable well screwed together car.

Disappointed that flat spot in power band seems to be unfix-able by the garage.

Still a very economic car, 50 to 55mpg day in day out.

Big boot, but small opening. Difficult to get bulky items in and out despite there being plenty of room.

Tough paint work. 70,000 miles and very few stone chips on the front.

2000 Volkswagen Passat SE 1.9TDI 130

Summary:

Solid, reliable and economical yet still fun

Faults:

Inter-cooler broke at about 100,000 due to slight front impact. This being due to the aforementioned part being placed right behind front bumper!!

Air Mass Meter (controls turbo air flow) broke around 105,000.

General Comments:

Survived very well, having been driven up and down britain's bumpy motorways for 3 years.

Great Performance considering up to 50mpg.

Cabin is comfy and well built, if slightly uninspiring.

2000 Volkswagen Passat V6 TDI 2.5 turbo diesel

Summary:

Awesome without shouting about it

Faults:

Small rattle in engine bay at tick-over. Sounds like heat plate is loose.

General Comments:

This is our fourth VW and third Passat Estate.

Car is very quick and economical.

Engine pulls like steam train in all gears.

TIP: Get out of first quickly and let torque in second really pull car along when moving off.

Sixth to fourth allows amazing overtaking in terms of safety and refinement.

Car is very quiet as well.

Load space is better proportioned than earlier version allowing items to be stored lengthways rather than sideways making it good for prams and buggies.

Getting 35MPG at moment with heavy right foot.

Interior is superb.

Standard equipment is excellent.

Overall would give this a 9.5/10.

So glad I did not buy A6 TDI or E Class 300TDI.

From the comments on your 2.5TDI you have pushed me into going for the 2.5TDI rather than the 1.9 TDI. I've another two weeks to wait till delivery so I will be in touch again to give you my comments on the car.

2000 Volkswagen Passat S 1800

Summary:

A noise infested bore

Faults:

A very bad rasping noise from the bottom of the car when cold. This is standard on all Passat's according to the dealer. I don't think I've ever owned a car as bad.

General Comments:

The inside is black and would not look out of place in a horror film.

You don't really sound like you have a lot to grumble about!

If you paid a bit of extra money to VW, I'm sure they could fix you up a yellow and pink striped interior...
