1991 Ford Escort LX 1.9 S.E.F.I from North America

Summary:

Fun little car/V6 Camaro eater - Love it

Faults:

Timing belt broke.

Repaired wiper assembly due to age.

General Comments:

One of the best cars that I have owned, would buy another '91-'96 Escort if the need should be. Just did 548 miles on 13.1 gallons of gas.

1991 Ford Escort GT 1.8 litre from North America

Summary:

Still running strong, the last car I want to buy

Faults:

Transmission needed rebuilding.

Water pump.

General Comments:

Flooded twice up over the roof, involved in 8 major accidents most above $2,500. Engine runs great. Upgraded suspension will outrun and handle my Dad's new Taurus SHO.

1991 Ford Escort Popular 1.3 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Cheap and reliable

Faults:

The car had a new clutch at 15OK and 221k. Brake pads lasted around 30k as did the tyres. As far as I know the last owner had one set of shocks at 108k. Services were also every 10k rather than the recommended 6k.

General Comments:

The car never failed an MOT whilst I owned it and was on its original engine and gearbox. Sadly I only got £750 when I sold it.

1991 Ford Escort GT 1.8 16v dohc from North America

Faults:

160k miles:

-alternator died.

-rear brake caliper broke.

-coolant overflow leak.

-bent rear trailing arm (minor bend).

-window seals have leak which can make the windows difficult to roll up from time to time.

General Comments:

The engine is a tank. This car has seen 7 grand (redline) very often. No engine problems. It's been in 6 major accidents - in excess of 2500 dollars in repairs each time (body work). Factory stereo was first to go. Did suspension work - car turns on a dime at 60mph.

I might get that car and your info made my decision.

1991 Ford Escort Popular 1.3 HCS petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Suspension bushes.

Suspension parts.

Seat frame.

Seat frame mounts.

Major engine problems.

Rusty bodywork.

Rear heater and rear wipe electrics.

And probably more, I just can't remember, there has been so much hassle with it.

General Comments:

I would not recommend a second hand Ford to anyone because of the trouble I have

had with mine and reports from my friends.

They're cheap until the breakdown.

People say it's easy to get bits for them but the newer Mk5 is hard to get second hand parts for. NEVER AGAIN!!

1991 Ford Escort Popular 1.3 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Rusty for the age of car, required drivers side sill welding already. Rear shocks replaced after 60k miles. Clutch, exhaust and alternator replaced after 70k miles. Engine clatter after 60k miles due to poor quality of 1.3HCS engine. Boot leaks and spare tyre recess fills with water.

General Comments:

Don't buy models equipped with the 1.3HCS engine.

Reliable car to get from A to B, always starts first time. Parts are very economical.

Can get up to 40mpg on motorways, but generally 30-32mpg around town.

Engine noisy when driving on motorways.
