1989 Geo Spectrum 1.5L from North America

Summary:

An excellent car

Faults:

The car is just great. my dad gave it to me on february 2003, and the only problem that I had was that the fan relay went down, so the fan didn't work, but I changed it myself and it was very cheap. my dad since buying this car in 1989, he never had a problem, so I own the car now.

General Comments:

This car is excellent, it has a great 1.5L carburated motor, it is enough to beat a 96 Honda civic. last time I did it with an Isuzu trooper, but my car reached its max speed, so he passed me, but hardly.

I also have a 1989 Geo Spectrum 1.5 with manual transmission and it doesn't have enough power to pass anything, it can barely pull itself around much less pass anything.

It is the catalytic converter; cut it off.

1989 Geo Spectrum 1.5L from North America

Summary:

Fantastic

Faults:

Clutch cable broke at around 80,000 miles. Fixed it myself, easy and cheap. Timing chain broke at 110,000 miles, cost me $400 dollars to have the dealer fix it. Windshield wiper motor went out around 130,000 miles, fixed it myself, got motor at junkyard, cheap. radio went out around 150,000 miles, got one at the junkyard, cheap.

General Comments:

Bought it new and "89" for $4,500 dollars Still driving it now "03".

Cheap transportation. Good millage, cheap insurance, cheap plates.

If the kids wanna take the dog along I say "sure".

I've had good luck, but I don't drive like a mad man. Changed oil every 5,000 miles.

I got a 89 Geo spectrum car myself too. I bought it brand new back in June of 89. I like the car cause it really save me a lot of money on gas. it has been a good car. but I only had a trouble a few time. I work on it myself and I am getting better at fixing it too. This car I have got has got 317,000 miles on it. I am still driving it too. I am gonna see if I can find me a really good rebuilt motor for them. The car got a lot of miles on it and I won't complaint about it. It is getting where it want to burn or use the oil. I am gonna try to find me a good rebuilt motor for that car. and maybe I can get another 300,000 miles on it. so if you keep the oil change like you said it will last you a long time too. that's what I did.

1989 Geo Spectrum CL 1.5 from North America

Summary:

Slow and stubborn

Faults:

1) Headliner has fallen

2) Bother rear doors will not open

3) CV joints are both going out

4) paint peeling from front bumper

5) UP-SHIFT light on dash quit

6) idle is acting up.

Engine sounds like a mad typewriter coming down the road, cars itself rides like a grocery cart.

General Comments:

As much as I dislike this car I have to say that its been fairly reliable for me. Its got a problem not if you drive for more than 20 minutes its not going to start back until its cooled completely off. I only paid 1500.00 cash so I guess I got a good deal. I wouldn't buy another Spectrum though-

1989 Geo Spectrum 4 Cylinder from North America

Summary:

A good beater of a car

Faults:

For a while this car ran great and was great for commuting. Recently, however, we've needed a new distributor. At the same time it was diagnosed that we need a new axle, transmission, and radiator.

The transmission has a terrible leak and you must refill it quite often. If you forget to fill it up, you sure feel it with terrible shifting and in bad cases stalling in the middle of a four lane highway. The leak was found in the radiator, in the part that cools the transmission fluid.

We've also been having really weird problems in which everything in the car would just shut down. All power would flicker off and the engine would stutter to a stop.

General Comments:

This car was given to me as a hand-me-down car. It was my older sister's, but she got a new one since the Geo could no longer take her far distance. I still have the bus I mentioned.

Currently the car is underneath a tarp next to the bus waiting to be used when I get a job. I hope that it won't blow up on me the first day I take it somewhere, but from these reviews it appears that won't happen.

The car has proved itself for my sister, however. The acceleration is terrible, but it has great fuel mileage and gets you from point A to point B with little cost.

Sorry that I couldn't list the mileage, I never memorized the odometer.
