1996 Nissan Hardbody Pickup XE 2.4L from North America

Summary:

Great, hope Nissan continues with the quality

Faults:

Transmission rebuilt at 200,000 miles along with new clutch ($1800).

Air bag sensor went out at 90,000 miles ($600).

General Comments:

Bucket seats would be more comfortable than the current bench seat.

Steering wheel coating has started to disintegrate, but it does has over 276k miles, so I think I got my moneys worth out of this.

It has been one reliable vehicle. It is still fast, and doesn't smoke or burn oil, so I think the key was to buy it with low miles and maintain it before it had a chance to be abused.

1996 Nissan Hardbody Pickup XE 2.4 from North America

Summary:

Best purchase I've made. Love it more than my Mustang GT Convertible

Faults:

I replaced the transmission, probably due to previous owner stupidity, and rebuilt the starter.

Other than that, and brakes and oil changes, I'm so pleased, and made in USA! Right here in TN,

General Comments:

I'd say it's the best purchase I've made. I drive this thing off road all the time, and highway, put on 33x12.50 tires, raised it, and drive it like a car, to the limits, daily....

1996 Nissan Hardbody Pickup XE 4x4 2.4L I-4 from North America

Summary:

So far OK with some exceptions

Faults:

Idle body and serpentine belt went abruptly at 68,000 en route to a flight at a faraway airport.

Body rust on driver's side door sill.

Only one plastic tooth holding lift gate up.

Finish wearing off of alloy wheels after one Vermont winter.

Replaced stock paper-wafer speakers with mid-range Ken-woods. OEM equipment speakers blew out.

General Comments:

The car is quick for a small output pickup truck.

Manual transmission very vague.

Clutch sometimes slips, wears easily on large hills.

Fit and finish excellent, except for some rust spots.

Interior is reliable and well organized; simplicity!

Car can handle rough in cold weather or rough pavement.

Weird feeling when in neutral when braking.

Gear pattern is precise, sometimes mistake third for first.

Low red line inhibits passing on highway.

Excellent car for summer activities!

Low range four-wheel drive works very well!

Would not recommend manual locking hubs.

Paid $4800 plus six percent Vermont sales tax, ~$5300, with sixty seven thousand miles on the odometer.

1996 Nissan Hardbody Pickup from North America

Faults:

My check engine light is on. Keep replacing parts and still getting codes. Don't know what to do anymore. Will not pass inspection in Massachusetts with the light on. It's cost me $800 so far and the light is still on. Help! Even brought it in for the recall and still nothing.

Disconnect the negative battery terminal and then reconnect it. It turned off the Check engine light on my 97 4X4 XE.

If your computer is newer in this truck it could be the catalytic converter. A good shop should be able to figure that one from your emissions test however.

My truck-97 XE- had the same thing going-disconnecting the battery will kill the light, but after a few days, if the error wasn't corrected it will come on again because it is read by the engine computer and a code is assigned. I suggest get a C.E.light scanner, (here in SoCal, Autozone lends it for free) plug it into the diagnostic port under the driver dash and read the numeric code. Code interpretations are then available from a Hayne's or a Chilton's repair manual for your truck.

1996 Nissan Hardbody Pickup XE 6 cylinder from North America

Summary:

XE - Best of the Lot!

Faults:

In the 6 years I have owned the vehicle, the only item I had to replace was the fuel pump.

General Comments:

This truck has been the most reliable unit I have ever owned. The 4x4 is exceptionally capable and the posi rear end makes it even more so.

Have to admit the options were minor, such as no air cond., however this somehow added to the character of the truck.

1996 Nissan Hardbody Pickup XE 2.4 from North America

Summary:

Best piece of machinery I ever bought

Faults:

Only had to replace CO sensor pulley, and timing chain. I live near the beach so I go through mufflers like crazy.

Will definitely have to replace transmission within another 50,000. But that's OK, I have put her through hell and back.

General Comments:

In the summer of 2005 I have plans to drop her 2"/3", put at least 5 grand into her. Make her my baby till the day she kicks the bucket.

I drive over 50 miles a day in her. Shes a great truck.
