1997 Opel Tigra 1.4 16v from Italy

Summary:

Good bargain

Faults:

Security belts are hard to be worn.

Back seats are too small (poor space in height)

Poor torque at low rpm

Steer assist is too hard.

General Comments:

Good gearshift

The car is quite comfortable (in front seats) but is quite expensive (in urban cycle hardly you can achieve 10km/l). The car setting is quite hard, and this helps in sport style driving...

1997 Opel Tigra from Norway

Summary:

Fun. A yellow Lotus Elise is better, though

Faults:

The clutch broke down at around 55000Km, car 3 years old. Brakes require lot of attention, and the engine head got broken and had to be substituted since the engine was eating water. Paint chips easily, and the colour of the plastic part tends to fade with respect to the one of the main metal body.

General Comments:

Despite all that, and all the money I've thrown after it, I love the car. It's light, agile, has a sharp steering (I use often recently a Leon20V, gee, it feels like a truck), the gearbox is *fast* and the engine has enough push - not to mention the lovely design, which is still way better than most younger and expensive cars (not to mention, in the lighter colours it still turns heads :). It has a bit of nasty behaviour on occasion, when pushed - it tends to spin and the front wheel block easily. It's far from perfect, dynamically (after all it's derived from the - ahem - Opel Corsa :-) but still lots of fun.

1997 Opel Tigra 1.4 from Taiwan

Faults:

Alternators, bearings, overheating, and belts are most common failures with most models in Taiwan including mine.

General Comments:

I think the manufacturer should build cars that will be suitable for the different conditions in different countries.

1997 Opel Tigra XE 1.4 16v petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Condensation in headlamps. 3 sets of replacements didn't cure the problem. All replacements under warranty.

Headlamp leveller motor replaced.

Oil pump gasket and pump replaced outside of warranty. Water pump replaced, outside of warranty.

Cam belt replaced, as above.

Paint chipping badly.

Latest (15/03/99), cold start problems, due back to dealer later this week.

General Comments:

I actually like this car, the look, the way it handles, the economy. It is however a flawed gem, and all the kings' horses and men can't seem to fix it satisfactorily.
