1998 Peugeot 206 1.6 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

An expensive and unreliable mistake

Faults:

Heating.

Brakes.

Radiator.

Electrics.

Then most recently, the gearbox.

In fact, far too much for not enough mileage!

General Comments:

It's comfy, looks good, and in the first year or so, drove really well. The nippy automatic transmission plus loose power steering with a relatively high driving position and roomy interior gives the feel of an oversized go-kart -- I bet the convertible CC model's a lot of fun.

But things started to go wrong after not very much use one winter, and it's been one thing after another. We've serviced it regularly, used it moderately, and had more issues with this than the other three cars in the household put together (at more expense, too). Now the automatic transmission's gone. Considering selling it for scrap as it's probably not worth fixing. Seriously disappointed with it, sticking to Toyotas and VWs from now on in!

The transmission solenoid should be replaced every 100.000 km with the timing belt (you do regularly change it, don't you?). If it is not replaced, eventually the car will go into limp mode.

The heater is not electric, but heated water. It may be linked to your radiator problem.

1998 Peugeot 206 LX 1.9 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Great drive, but a little small for my tall family

Faults:

Only fault so far has been a throttle cable needed replacement at 86,0000 miles. Cost of replacement about £50 but had courtesy car whilst being fixed.

The garage owner is not related, but willing to give details.

General Comments:

The car goes really well, rides well and is fun to drive compared to my other car, Vauxhall Omega automatic, which is quite staid in comparison.

Very economical on fuel and for the performance.

1998 Peugeot 206 XS 1.6 from UK and Ireland

Faults:

The stereo has failed twice but suddenly started again several days later on both occasions. The dealers have had a look at it (but the stereo was working at the time) and found nothing wrong with it. Also after being on holiday for a week, I returned to find the battery flat.

General Comments:

Nice looking car but I only bought it because I couldn't afford a Hyundai Coupe!

1998 Peugeot 206 LX 1.4 from UK and Ireland

Faults:

The dealership!I had seen the car in the showroom previously and spotted a dent in the door. I was told that it was not my car despite it being the same colour, trim level etc. On collecting the car the dent was still there (coincidence eh?) so Peugeot had to get someone in to sort it out, delaying picking the car up. However they did offer me a cuddly Peugeot Lion toy to make up for it (fantastic!)

General Comments:

Had it not been for the amatuerish way in which the dealership operates, I would have been over the moon. Superb car but sloppy dealership. Can't wait for the 206 GTi!!

1998 Peugeot 206 GLX 1.4 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Continued failure of the radio. Occasionally didn't work, then would work for no reason. Replaced twice before problem really sorted.

General Comments:

Lovely car to drive. 800 trip in 2 days no problem.

Supple ride and well equipped with air conditioning, 6 disc CD changer.

Engine perky, but 1.6 perhaps a better bet for a press-on driver.

Lots of space for dimensions of car and good mpg.
