1997 Peugeot 306 GTI-6 2.0 16v petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Fast, fun and noisy

Faults:

Very loud wind noise from the passenger side window.

Leaking through the passenger side door mirror fittings.

Gearbox linkage broke.

Squeaky clutch.

General Comments:

Although I have had a few problems with the car, they are mainly cosmetic. This car is extremely enjoyable to drive, fast or slow, the only thing that lets it down is the poor build quality.

I would recommend this car only to people who enjoy driving, it is not for those who just want to look good, it is not for inexperienced drivers either, it can get a little lairy.

I will buy another, but it will be nearly new.

1997 Peugeot 306 D Turbo 1.9 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Lukewarm hatch alternative

Faults:

Dash rattles.

Windows rattle (door lock rods).

Condensation in the fog lamps.

Air bag warning light fixed three times.

Heavy front tyre wear.

General Comments:

Don't take it to a Peugeot dealer! Find a reputable independent garage who are much cheaper. My local Peugeot dealer quoted twice as much for 20,000 mile service and did not know what was involved!

6ft plus? Check the headroom in cars with a sunroof!

Good looking car, reasonable/good performance, good fuel economy if the turbo is used sparingly.

1997 Peugeot 306 XSi 2.0 from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

A sporty and luxurious hatch

Faults:

None.

Rear disc pads replaced at 25,000k.

Rattly fuse box cover.

General Comments:

Very good car for steering, suspension, and handling in general. A little loose feeling after some period of ownership, which whilst not resulting in anything concrete, the car doesn't feel as tight as it once did.

The fit and finish is fair, the quality of the switches and levers are very good. Comfort and noise levels are good.

1997 Peugeot 306 GTi-6 2.0 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A fast grown up hatch

Faults:

Nothing as yet! I've only done 3000 miles in 6 months.

General Comments:

Good car, let down by:

Looks the same as the rest of the 306 range.

Large turning circle.

Low end torque.

Slow steering rack.

It is, however, wonderful to drive fast with a nice noise at about 2500->5000 revs. Brakes are very good.

1997 Peugeot 306 LXDT 1.9 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A let-down

Faults:

Airbag sensor light came on after a slight knock.

Perpetual rattles, not sorted by the dealer.

Recurrent loss of power on acceleration.

Piston (expensive) blew through the bottom of the engine at 52,000 miles!

General Comments:

Good for motorway driving - has a nice surge of power at 70 or 80mph, but recurrent faults and appalling dealer servicing don't make up for this. And Peugeot are totally unsympathetic about a major engine failure in a car less than three years old.

Have now had two Peugeots and in my experience they don't live up to their reputation. Will never buy another.

Was this a piston through the sump or is this just another case of 1997 Peugeot Citroen 1.9XUDT conrod failures that have been springing up? sounds like faulty parts to me.

1997 Peugeot 306 Estate 1.8 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Collapse of the power steering unit with damage to the cooling and electrics. Repair cost £240 plus days awaiting spare parts. Refusal of Peugeot and Arnold Clark (suppliers) to offer more than £100 in "goodwill" settlement.

1997 Peugeot 306 GTi 6 2.0 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

The best high performance small car

Faults:

Minor electrical problems with windows and airbag.

General Comments:

Easy to maintain although fairly high running costs due to petrol and insurance.

Performance is unbelievable in speed, handling and stopping.

The only problem is the steering lock, the turning circle is so large you are usually left stranded at mini roundabouts and tight corners.

1997 Peugeot 306 GTi-6 2.0 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A high performance lemon

Faults:

Airbag light fault.

Oxygen sensor fault.

Alternator failed (breakdown).

Gearbox linkage broke (breakdown).

Very easily scratched/chipped paintwork.

Alloys badly scraped due to design wider than tyres.

Groaning clutch cable.

General Comments:

Great car to drive with lots of low down torque and good handling but everything that could go wrong seems to have gone wrong. After two breakdowns in two months I am now going to have to sacrifice driving pleasure for a bit more reliability by trading in for something a bit more boring.
