1997 Renault Megane 16v coupe 2.0 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Complete waste of money and time!

Faults:

The radio goes off when it wants.

At the moment I'm having trouble starting the car.

It starts when it wants to.

I've called the AA out to it on several occasion's, but it always seems to start when they turn up, which is quite embarrassing!!

I've been told it's an immobilizer fault.

The car has spent two weeks at my local Renault dealer and they carn't find anything wrong with it!!

How frustrating!!!

I will never buy any Renault ever again!

General Comments:

The car is very nippy and drives very nice. That's if it wants to start!

The interior is very plastic and could be a lot better.

1997 Renault Megane Coupe Sport 1.6.e from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Young drivers affordable dream

Faults:

Ignition coil needed replaced just after purchase.

Spoiler paint bubbling.

Fuel injector needed replaced.

Warning light constantly flashed even after "repair"

General Comments:

Being a younger driver, the Megane Coupe's looks was highly appealing. The 8V engine also helped keep the insurance down to under £2000. The car, a real head turner, turned too many police officers heads and often resulted in frequent visits to the police station with my documentation. Apart from that the car was my dream. £20 of petrol got me around 180 miles on the motorway, and a lot less driving in the city.

However the problems that seem to occur after the 50,000 mark were hard hitting. The dealership did nothing to help with these problems and blamed my driving methods. The car being my pride and joy was not ever pushed to the limits or even driven uneconomically, however my complaints did not have any impact.

The pro's outweigh the con's and the car is worth every penny I paid.

1997 Renault Megane RN Paris 1.4 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Good value

Faults:

Some slight issues when changing into second gear.

General Comments:

A nice car overall. A brilliant choice for a first car (as in my case) - reliable , fun to drive and practical, however, it is slow off the mark and is sluggish when on any form of incline.

I had a Renault Megane RN and it had to be the most unreliable car I have ever bought. Power steering rack had to be replaced at 29,000 miles, the cam belt snapped at 50,000 all the door locks broke, My dream of it being taken away to a scrap yard and being crushed never happened so I was jumping for joy when I traded it in. would never touch another Renault with a barge pole.

1997 Renault Megane RN 1.4 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A very good value for money car

Faults:

The driver's side front wheel bearing needed replacing.

General Comments:

I was very wary about buying a Renault, but have been very pleased with what is essentially a basic car.

The 1.4 engine takes a bit of hard accelerator to get it revving well, but you don't need to drive the car hard as it is fine once going.

The paintwork seems a bit thin, but there is no rust. Country lanes and the hedges take their toll in little scratches.

The RN is a very basic car, but you do get a cassette/radio. There is no central locking and this is a pain as you have to go round locking every door by hand.

Servicing is not cheap, but it is very economical. I have got over 50 miles to the gallon on average. It doesn't use oil or lose water between services.
