1988 Vauxhall Astra GTE 8V 2.0 from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Front caliper sticking, but now freed radiator was leaking and a couple of hoses needed changing.

General Comments:

Bought car 6 months ago. Paid £1250 which was a complete bargain. Put alloys dimmer cap on vehicle and had it chipped making it run on 137 bhp.

Car needs lowering but can't afford yet. Is quick in a straight line.

LCD dash is great and for the money you get a hell of a lot of car.

1988 Vauxhall Astra Olympic (Merit) 1.3 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Replacement driveshaft gaiters, exhaust manifold, otherwise no problems during last 17,000 miles. Rust above the rear wheelarches is beginning to be a problem.

General Comments:

Very reliable, nice to drive apart from firm ride. A five speed gearbox would have been better for motorway driving but still fairly quiet at 80-90mph once settling down to a cruising speed. Overall, very impressed with the car.

1988 Vauxhall Astra Merit 1.2 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Watch the rear drum brakes.

On my Nova the back left lock completely when the car is first run in the morning. Other brakes are fine.

V. little rust.

General Comments:

The best car money can buy.

Getting a NOVA GTE hatchback next.

Sticking with 1.2 saloon for insurance purposes.

EVIL Citroen, EVIL Metro.

Godly NOVA.

1988 Vauxhall Astra Merit 1.2 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Usual consumables. Loads of bulbs and fuses. Drivers door window winder doesn't wind any more, despite being replaced, but was always stiff from new.

Broke down once when clutch cable snapped, after having new clutch fitted.

Other than that, nothing really.

General Comments:

An excellent little car and cheap to run too. 92,000 miles of problem-free motoring.

1988 Vauxhall Astra Countryman 1.3 petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Nothing major, just the usual parts that expire due wear and tear.

General Comments:

Great second hand buy, especially if you've just passed your test. Newer models are even more reliable! Second hand spares are readily available from scrap yards and the engine is dead easy to service yourself.
