1984 Volkswagen Golf C 1.6 diesel from Netherlands

Summary:

A cheap reliable car

Faults:

The only thing what happened was the heater of the interior, it blew at 295000 kilometres.

General Comments:

This is a very cheap car to run, in maintain ace and on fuel economy.

As it was my first car, it was a pleasure to drive it.

1984 Volkswagen Golf C 1.6 from Netherlands

Summary:

The most reliable cheap car I've ever had!

Faults:

Crack in the expansion tank, which caused a minor coolant leak.

Carb pulldown box is leaking, causing an unwilling engine the first minute or two after a cold start.

Rusty (steel) rims, need a repaint.

General Comments:

This car is almost in the state it left the factory and has a ridiculously low mileage. It still has the original tires!

Good, smooth running engine, but the fuel consumption is a bit high compared to modern standards (approx. 9 liters per 100 km).

There is absolutely no luxury in this "C" edition. I got some interior parts and windshield wiper interval relays from a scrap Golf, to make life more comfortable.

Boring paintwork and interior. Have to remember the license plate to retrieve your car in a big parking lot. It happened more than once that I was sticking the key into the lock and found out it didn't fit, simply because it was the wrong car.

Having sold the above mentioned car two years ago because of a company car (I had three cars in the lot, a bit much for one person ;-) ) I recently spoke the guy who bought the car. It didn't surprise me that the car is still running. The only maintenance (apart from a yearly oil change) needed were new tires and a new timing belt, which were both about time as they have never been replaced since the car was sold new in 1984! And recently, the car was an MoT failure because of a problem in the brake distribution system, which was not cheap to fix, but worth every penny considering the great state the car is in. You wouldn't believe the car is 20 years old!

1984 Volkswagen Golf GTi 8v from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Very reliable, economical and fast

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

Revision of the original (and probably best) mk1 Golf GTi, gorgeous looks and interior (black/grey/red).

Fast, but not extremely fast. Handles well, but probably not as go-kart like as the mk1. Ideal for the motorway.

Very few things go wrong with these cars.

1984 Volkswagen Golf GTi 1.8 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A high performance bargain and reliable

Faults:

Only the battery going flat which I have changed.

Most problems were there when I got it, dodgy rev counter and water temp gauges, rear window heater strips not working, driver door falling a bit when open, driver seat tatty and the gear linkage being dodgy.

General Comments:

Very fast car, nice engine sound, really deep and involving.

Economical - first check I got 41 mpg, good on a motorway cruise at 70/80 in 5th at low revs.

Very good handling, a bargain at £500.

1984 Volkswagen Golf GLi 1.7 diesel from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Surprisingly quick for a diesel

Faults:

Suspension problems- due to the previous owner running it up too many kerbs.

All the stop lights mysteriously stopped working...

I think there is an oil leak - warning 'chime' comes on spontaneously and a thump to the dashboard seems to shut it up!

General Comments:

All the ladies look at this car!

The car is surprisingly quick for a diesel. Even with five people on board it kept up with hoons in a '93 Daihatsu Charade Turbo! The engine is not smokey at all even after 121,000 miles. I am saving lots of money also at the service station - less than half the price to fill it up than the old Magna!

The car feels like it needs another gear on the highway as it seems to be revving quite high - no tacho! There isn't much rust - or that I know about anyway.

1984 Volkswagen Golf GTi 8V 1.8 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Excellent fun. Recommended

Faults:

Many things needed renewing/replacing but this was due to the age of the car eg. steering rack, rear wheels bearings, exhaust manifold gasket, difficult getting 1st and 2nd gear.

General Comments:

Excellent chassis, perfect handling, the best car I've owned for driver involvement. Would have another one any day, but a bit slow by modern standards in unmodified format.

Sadly the insurance companies aren't too keen on them.

1984 Volkswagen Golf GTi Convertible 1.8 injection petrol from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Alternator needing replacement after 14 years.

Rust in the top of the fuel pipe falling into the fuel tank and causing the 2 fuel pumps to get clogged, overheat and fail - remedied by new fuel pipe and pumps - this is problem common to all Golf Convertibles where water drips down from the hood.

General Comments:

Considering the age of the car, the build quality, performance and handling are superb for a car of its vintage. The body work is very good and the doors close with a solid clunk! The engine just goes on forever and has enough torque to pull from most gears without labouring. The car can be run on unleaded every other tank full without conversion.
