2003 Volkswagen LT 35 GLI 2.8 from North America

Summary:

Great car to drive, but the electrical gremlins are becoming too much

Faults:

Passenger side window stopped working.

Stereo stopped working.

Cigarette lighter has never worked, and won't work even with replaced fuses.

Brake light is out and drains the battery if replaced.

Driver's side door latch is failing, which means the door open chime comes on randomly along with the interior lights.

Check engine light is permanently on for no reason.

Moon-roof sometimes has random issues with closing (as in it won't). Luckily I've eventually gotten it to close after a few dozen attempts.

E-brake has issues, is stuck on sometimes and grinds when not on.

General Comments:

The car has tremendous power and is really fun to drive.

The transmission is great, but the brakes are weak, even after they've been replaced.

Going over small bumps in the road at low speeds results in all sorts of weird noises from under the car.

Overall it's a really nice car with either poor craftsmanship or poor engineering. Hopefully VW is working hard on their reliability issues, because at this point, the electrical issues are insane.

1991 Volkswagen LT 35 Extra LWB, extra high roof 2.4 diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Brilliant for hard work

Faults:

The rear door fell off.

Lots of faults with the lighting.

Off the road at the moment due to something blowing up in the engine.

Interior indestructible, though the radio/cassette player gave up the ghost while travelling off-road.

It got a little rusty; however, a full bodywork job sorted that one out.

General Comments:

What can I say? This van is absolutely indestructible! It's still got a great interior, covered nearly a quarter of a million miles and will hopefully keep going strong.

My family have used this van for going fully across Europe at least twelve times, and it's always got there coping very well with the horrific Eastern European roads. It's also huge inside, making it great for house moves, and I've camped inside many times.

The performance was never that good, and now top speed is only about 70 mph down a hill with the wing in the right direction. But high speeds is not what it was designed for... all I can say is that it's a great workhorse!

I agree. Sold my LT 35e yesterday and I think I will regret it for many years.

I'm feeling blue, someone drove into my LT today, financially it may be a write-off, however thanks to its brick privy nature we're all OK. I only hope they can fix my lieutenant Berty Clive, this is a truly great van. Fingers crossed.

Your engine blowing up may be because you haven't changed the cam belt. I have had my LT since new and it is a P reg and has never let me down.
