1995 Volvo 940 2.4 turbo diesel from Belgium

Summary:

320.000 km and never let me down

Faults:

One damper replaced under dealer warranty.

Clutch replaced at 312.000 km.

My previous car, a Volkswagen Golf, started falling to pieces from kilometer 1000.

General Comments:

Maintain it carefully, and it is indestructible. A spacious, safe and very comfortable long-distance hauler. Seats are superb. (I have a 14-year history of back problems, but my 940's finely shaped and heated seats bring me to Italy or Southern France in top condition!) Only thing I miss: air conditioning.

I have a volvo 940 estate, 2.4 diesel. When I bought car it drove like a dog, very underpowered. Thirsty, I took car to specialist garage, they timed the engine properly. Now I am very happy. It goes like a rocket, very smooth. 38mpg @ 70mph. I am having problems with the speedometer. It only works when it wants to! Sometimes the sunroof opens then won't close. Hey ho, I love this car.

If the sunroof is electric, the usual problem is the switch on the dashboard. Remove and dismantle the switch. The contacts are usually dirty. Clean the contacts and check the white roller has no flat spots. Reassemble the switch and the roof should work again. Recommend lubricating the accessable running mechanism of the sunroof as well.

1995 Volvo 940 Polar 2.3 Low Pressure turbo from Belgium

Summary:

A lifestyle choice

Faults:

The oil pan on the auto box cracked, welding fixed that. The radiator cracked, but I replaced that in half-an-hour. The most expensive was the ignition power amplifier unit. The rest of the money that I have spent on the car has not been necessary, at least not if you ask my wife.

General Comments:

I often drive 24 hour drives or longer, and I hardly notice it. Climate control, autobox, cruise control, power adjustable seats, heated seats, heated mirrors, you name it, my car has it.

The car drives like a dream, the autobox and the low pressure turbo operate very well together as the torque is low down. With the sports suspension that I installed, it also handles very well and corners fast without any complaint.

These cars are built to last and are built to be easy to fix. They are the last of a great generation of Volvos.
