1993 Mitsubishi Galant HI review from Australia and New Zealand
"Decent car until a cracked cylinder head fatality"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Gear box felt very loose and popped out of gear in reverse. Gear box bearings made grinding noises. I've since been told this is fairly common problem with this car. You can live with it for a while, but the whole gear box to be replaced eventually. Approximate cost is about $1200 (parts from wreckers who do installations are cheapest).
Paint peeled very badly.
All of a sudden at around 200,000 Kl-ms while driving I felt a clunk and a loss in power. I suspected a blown head gasket, but it turned out not one, but two of the cylinder heads cracked which in turn bent the shaft. The cost of an engine replacement was estimated around $9000, $5500 more than I paid for the car itself. Not worth it, I've since bought something else.
General comments?
Despite the bad paint and gearbox issues I liked this car up until the point the engine just died (see above).
The seats are very comfy and all extras are there. Performance is adequate from the 2Lt V6 (though I'd always go manual) and handling is good despite it being more soft and family orientated.
Fuel consumptions is what you'd expect: somewhere between a 4 cylinder and a large 6, though premium is required.
I'd be warey of gear box issues as, I've heard, it is and issue with this car and mine was no exception.
The screwed engine was a real shock and a shame as I now have to sell the car for real cheap. Perhaps more regular servicing could have prevented this?
