2003 GMC Safari ext review from North America
"A good practical work-horse"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
This is my second Safari. My first was a '93 and I drove it for ten years and 160,000 miles. When it was
sold, it still ran and drove well. It is all about how
you take care of what you drive.
With my '03 I have had some minor cosmetic issues, but
only one drive ability issue. The distributor cap was
not vented properly. Moisture built up and caused cross-
firing. Dealership mechanics are just parts changers.
They "fixed" the problem, and it came back 6 months
later. I investigated and corrected the problem, and
it has not returned.
General comments?
I ordered this light truck with a 3.73 ratio rear end.
Yes, it burns more fuel. But for light towing (2800 lbs) it performs quite well for a V-6. GM does need to
improve their fit and finish. And why, in 20 years
of production, have they not powered the sliding door?
All-in-all, it is a good vehicle. It handles like what
it is: a van. All cars and trucks require TLC of some
sort. If you drive them hard they will break hard.
