1997 Mercedes-Benz C-Class elegance review from UK and Ireland
"Avoid Mercs, spend your money on a Lexus"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Electric motors in Rear Windows ceased,
Gearbox required servicing (cost £220 to fix)
Remote key lost its settings and wouldn't cancel the alarm (cost me £291.00 to fix at mercedes)
Fuel gauge stops working when tank filled up to max level,
mass air flow meter problem. (don't buy one from mercedes please unless you have recently won the lottery)
Hesitant acceleration (mind you probably due to LPG conversion)
Very heavy on petrol 22Mpg even after a general service.
Car has too many electrical and electronic gadgets that can and do go wrong.
Rear doors accumulate water after going through car wash or after it rains.
General comments?
Car not as comfortable to drive as my previous car a citroen xantia 1.9td.
My C180 struggled to get up to speed and felt unsafe at more than 75 miles per hour.
Engine noisy over 60MPH.
Cabin not very spacious.
Only good thing about the car is that it feels solid.
But I would rather have the get and go supple and quiet ride of my old reliable citroen Xantia TD over this w202 c180 anyday... only thing is my wife likes the benz and disliked the citroen as was old.
