1997 Lotus Elise S review from UK and Ireland

"You risk spending a lot of money on repair work in return for a fast and fun go-kart"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Problems include (in no particular order):

1. Trim badly worn

2. New coolant pipe (May 2000)

3. New head gasket (May 2000)

4. Driver's window collapsed (twice April 2000)

5. New driver's side door retainer (May 2000)

6. Problems opening door locks

7. Boot release difficult

8. New steering rack boots (May 2000)

9. Alarm problems (April 1999)

Problems in the pipeline:

1. New steering rack (recommended Dec 2000)

2. New rear dampers (recommended Dec 2000)

3. New catalytic converter (recommended Aug 2000)

General comments?

The problem list has taken the shine off this car. In mitigation, however, I have not experienced any particular problems in the last year (10,000 mileage), but I still worry on long journeys if I'm going to be stranded.

Lack of support is serious worry for me. I find it difficult to get a second opinion on any mechanical problems.

I decided to ignore the suggested repair work (listed in the problems section) and my car went on to pass its first MOT in August 2000 (it failed it when I dropped it off at the Lotus garage!)

If the car fails its MOT in August 2001 because of the cat or steering rack (or any other major expense) I will sell it; it's not worth it!

The vehicle has many quirks (leaky roof, stiff window winders, boot release cable) that can be handled when you are familiar with the car.

It drives and handles very well (but not in the wet) and has great performance at legal speeds.
