1999 Audi A6 Avant review from North America
"A beautifully-handling and luxurious car with high ownership costs"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
The fuel gauge failed shortly after we bought the car; it would register at full for a few hundred miles and suddenly drop down to nearly empty. We had this fixed, and the 2nd gauge also died. We're on our 3rd gas gauge, and this one finally works.
One of the automatic windows broke; it wouldn't close completely and remained stuck partially open.
General comments?
The A6's engine is fantastic for highway driving, but the 5-gear transmission does a lot of down-shifting on slower roads with hills.
The fuel efficiency is decent on highways but it is a true gas-guzzler in the city; I've averaged 9 miles per gallon in city driving! On the whole it averages 17 miles per gallon, pretty bad for a wagon.
The interior is very comfortable.
The Bose sound system is spectacular.
The car's handling is amazing; it has an incredible turning radius.
The all-wheel drive makes a big difference in winter.
