1986 Hyundai Pony GL review from North America
"Good all-round cheap transportation"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Up until recently this car has been amazingly reliable.
Typical problems associated with this model:
Weeping oil from front of head gasket.
Slight shimmy from worn bearings.
Rusty and worn below rear of seats (front).
Condenser failed at 221,892 km.
Replaced alternator and plug wires.
Replaced condenser with generic one from Canadian Tire.
General comments?
I am amazed how cheap this thing is to run.
I bought it for around $650.00 Can. in Dec. of 2000 and basically ignored it.
It seems the mid-eighties models are generally the easiest to work on and most reliable vehicles on the planet.
It is also probably one of the cheapest to run as well.
I put oil and gas in it. I replaced the fuel pump as the one that was in it when I got it had been put on by some amateur and was leaking.
I pay about $53.00 dollars a month for basic insurance and the tank costs about $25.00 to fill with regular gas
which is about 72 cents a litre right now.
What more can I say? This car is a cheap commuter vehicle and is reliable as hell. I'm getting another one for sure.
