1997 Peugeot 306 D Turbo review from UK and Ireland
"Other cars seem to get smaller in the interior mirror"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
I haven't had any major problems with my 306 (touch wood). I have however noticed minor, common faults such as a noisy passenger side wing mirror.
The interior build quality is poor and a common problem occurring with Peugeot's is the front seats fail to locate (3 door models only). This happened with my 106, meaning a change of seats 3 times. It has also happened with my 306. Although it isn't expensive to fix. It is annoying.
Cold starting seems to be noisy and rough, but when warm it runs perfect.
Fuel consumption isn't as good as I thought it would be (approx 35 mpg). Probably because I'm used to 65 mpg from my 106 1.4d. A heavy right foot doesn't help either.
General comments?
I look for any excuse to drive my 306. It is fun to drive due to its power surge at 2,500 revs and its great handling. I suppose the D Turbo is the poor-man's GTI-6. It also has a very similar amount of torque, meaning very good pick up in higher gears.
Even after 2,500 miles, although I have got used to the car, I can still feel the power.
I'm only 18 years old and so wanted fast, but cheap insurance. I've found what I wanted in this car. Put the D-Turbo at the side of any XR2i, Astra SRi or any poxy Corsa/Nova and the torque/power combination will put you in front.
