1991 Volkswagen Polo GT review from UK and Ireland
"Black Beast for little cash!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Rear wheel bearing went at 83000, exhaust fell off, two new tires, clutch cable went at 86000.
General comments?
I bought the car after having the lethargic 1043cc engined saloon, becuase I loved the polo, but wanted something with a bit more cred, and of course ooommpph! the GT amazed me with its acceleration from stopped, the fastest 1.3 I've ever been in by far (i have taken a focus 1.6 zetec, saxo vtr and various other cars in the black beast). The o-60 was timed at 8.8 seconds on a flat straight road and the most i dared to take it to was 108MPH (with 3 people and luggage up a hill) impressive for a car that cost £420! It rarely let me down and the fitment of 185 tires improved grip and handling further. For long journeys it wasn't great due to its lack of space and jarring ride (with alloys), but the front sports seat are of a quality to be found in a golf vr6! and even with 4 people and alll their luggage the car exceled in performance. The fitment of an induction kit is advised for that roar and extra 'lift'.
