1988 Daihatsu Charade CLS review from North America
What things have gone wrong with the car?
1. Engine damage at 183000 miles due to
certain components being improperly installed when I took it in for a timing belt change... would have run forever otherwise (?)
2. Climate control levers became balky and/or jammed a bit around 140000 miles.
General comments?
Consider this: a 3 cylinder, 1 liter engine car, carrying 600+ pounds of people daily over 130 miles, at speeds of 65-85mph, racks up 183000 miles before succumbing to engine problems caused by poor mechanicing. Car cost only US$6100. Car got consistent 45 mpg, with one run of 55.6 mpg (when I drove more sedately). Silky smooth 5-speed tranny; exterior & interior finish held up well. Not much torque, but what do expect from a 3-banger?
I wish Daihatsu still sold cars in the US!
