1991 GMC Sierra review from North America
"love my '91 GMC"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Factory tape deck gave out at 125,000km.
Replaced transmission at 190,000kms.
Replaced ball joints, due to excessive noise at 200,000km.
Seems to really go through universal joints (6 sets so far) but they are easily changed and cheap, also new ones really smooth out the performance.
General comments?
Canada has cold nights, sometimes the truck will sit overnight in -45 degrees Celcius and sometimes colder than that, if you can believe it. I am not very friendly to my vehicle because I never use a block heater and I bought this truck as a work vehicle so early morning starts were common place. Over the time that I have owned this vehicle I have yet have a cold morning that the truck did not start due to mechanical failure only a weak battery, however a ten year old battery from the factory not working at that temperature is pretty good I figure.
As A performance vehicle I was quite surprised when I could get the truck up to speed reliably quick when being used for general work purposes.
The truck has now been retired as a work truck and due to the rarity of finding an extended cab with the five speed "Ghetrang" or "Gut-rag" transmission as it is referred to by mechanics. I decided to put some money into it instead of trading it in on a new vehicle. As a toy it has been repainted and suspension work as well as exhaust work and a few performance upgrades have been made to enhance the already powerfully quick off the line performance. My truck will smoke lots of performance cars and it would do it while needing a tune up pulling a reasonable load. Go figure. I can't believe the way it will travel long distances at incredibly high speeds to North American standards (140kms for hours) and drop a gear and pass anything on a steep incline. In short, as if you could not tell I like my truck.
