1972 Peugeot 504 2000 review from Australia and New Zealand
"As Peugeot would say - Engineered to be enjoyed..."
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Head gasket @50000 miles due to corrosion.
Common gear box leak @ 61000 on selector shaft housing wear.
Exhaust repairs due to thrashing.
Clutch replacement due to drag racing against Volkswagens.
Suspension and rubbers due to 30 years of wear.
General comments?
This car is a serious rocket at 110 mph.
It is capable of 0-62 in under 10 seconds even though it is very standard.
On gravel the all-round independent suspension with its long travel really pay off. Not to mention even better handling through narrow city streets with its sheer braking power.
Long trips are quite enjoyable due to the above reasons and also the lounge chairs that Peugeot left in the car at the factory.
Working on the car can be quite straight forward unless you attempt anything major, like a clutch replacement. I love hoisting engines in and out of cars!
The torque tube around and drive shaft makes the the drive train a solid assembly from the block to the diff, adding to the robustness of this thirty year old bullet proof pursuit car.
Visibility is good with no significantly bad blind spots.
All round, quite an enjoyable drive.
