1970 Chrysler New Yorker 2-dr HT review from Germany

What things have gone wrong with the car?

The original Carter Carburetor was worn out, I replaced it by an Edelbrock 750cfm.

When I bought the car in the Netherlands, it was equipped with a liquid gas system. It had to be removed for the german license plate. Anyway, it was not the right thing for a muscle car like this one.

It got dual exhaust, at first with Edelbrock RPM mufflers, but they were too loud, so I tried Dynomax Ultra Flow, but those were too quiet. Flowmaster 40 Delta Flow was the best thing to do...

Airco doesn't work, heater is always on "full", I took out the fuse, so I don't mind in summer with all windows down. In winter it's quite alright.

I had the Alternator replaced at 81000 mls.

Rear Axle always made some noise, at 82000 mls, new bearings were installed.

Paint is poor, flat dark red, has some dents in the front fenders, but somehow I like it...

My best car ever...

I've looked for a 69-71 Chrysler 300 or NY for about one year, but here in Europe it's almost impossible to get one, even worse in acceptable condition.

So I was just about to give up and buy a 70 Caddy de Ville. I made an appointment with the Caddy-seller, but next day I discovered my New Yorker on a dutch website.

When I saw the car for the first time, it looked rotten, neglected, I thought "oh no...!"

BUT when I took the first ride, I couldn't help buying it... GREAT!!!

Anyone who has never taken place behind the steering-wheel of a fuselage-c-body should experience this, a great ride... The broad hood seems to be floating above the pavement in front of you, steering is so comfortable, and: This powerful 440 engine...

It has awesome power, OK, it doesn't perform like a B-body with the same engine, but despite its weight, it has a really impressive go, better than any other U.S.-fullsize-car I've ever owned.

Cabin is so roomy, and sensationally comfortable with the bucket-seat-option and armrest.

The TF 727 transmission shifts virtually unnoticable, but very quick, no delays.

Brakes are very good, due to front discs (I remember my 67 Lincoln... does it really ever stop or am I gonna hit the car in front of me...??)

I've read some surveys here about this car saying it would stall at traffic lights... mine doesen't, but hitting the brakes sometimes takes power from the steering...

But I love it, this fuselage-styling is great, especially the 2-dr HT. With the low roofline it looks like a "factory custom"

My car has a slight front-lowering, not too obtrusive, but effective, and 255-RWL-tyres rear, 215 front.

Driving it around here in Germany is great fun, even through these narrow streets in my hometown Cologne.

With the dual Flowmasters you can't get enough of the rumbling sound from the back. People turn their heads once for the looks and twice for the sound.
