1972 Ford Mustang Convertable review from North America

"I miss this car!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Engine failed at 120,000.00, clutch at 100,000.00, replaced the top twice (made a mistake the second time and used a plastic window to save some cash, do not ever do this!). Voltage regulator, and the car had that rear suspension squat.

General comments?

This was the best car I ever owned, and I still regret selling it. It was the last year of the big mustangs, and it was a beauty as a convertible. I bought it from the original owners with 36 thousand miles on the odometer, and immediately replaced the entire exhaust system and the brakes, they apparently owned the car from 73 to 84 without ever servicing these two areas. The engine was well maintained though. I had a friend of the family who was a tremendous mechanic and the car ran so well you could not tell it was running if you sat at a stop light even with the top down. It was a 3 speed (weak link for performance) and had the lowest red line I think I have ever seen outside of jags (5200 rpm). It was a cruiser and that was that. Mine was a strippy in terms of options, no power am radio, no AC, just a power top and roll up windows, but it's a convertable, what more do you need. I used to drive this car in the winter with the top down and the heater just a cranking. I would recommend to anyone looking for a signature American muscle convertable to pick one up although they can be cost prohibitive in good condition and a nightmare in bad. Beware of the engine wear that can happen over time as the engines were designed for leaded fuel. I think that was the reason mine wore out as I did not beat on the car at all. I replaced it with a 302 out of a 79 station wagon that had more horsepower than the orignil mill and never had a problem after that. Get one put the top down on a spring or fall evening with a little bite in the air and you will fall in love.
