1989 Audi 90 review from Lebanon

"Reliable tough car"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

- Front suspensions were badly placed when I first bought it, causing the steering (although power steering) to be very heavy. Fixed them right away.

- The car had some kind of a short circuit in which I had to tow it. It happened to me twice.

- Dynamo belt got loose and cut the steering wheel belt too. I replaced both belts.

- The car always bothers me with electrical problems which are apparently common in Audi.

General comments?

The 1989 Audi 90 is a car that still fits today's surrounding and its design is not very outdated, it is definitely not the typical 80's old fashioned boxy car.

The 2.3E 10V engine is a fascinating 5 cylinder engine which has a unique, growling sound to it and fits perfectly with the 5 speed manual transmission, while sometimes I feel that the car needs a 6th gear for high speed cruising. Fuel consumption is excellent considering its fine power. It can be driven hard and one can feel the torque rushing through the engine, or one can just cruise around and it will act smoothly. The car is stable at high speeds, however ABS brakes are a must for increased safety.

The 90 runs smoothly through uphill mountain roads. The 5 cylinder engine is, and as I previously read from comments and from my experience, a rock solid engine that would last decades before giving up and retire. This Audi is definitely reliable considering it can support Lebanon's bumpy wrecked roads.

The interior is roomy enough for a car of that size, trunk needs more space though, the blue velour seats are fairly comfortable, however the headrests and driving position could be better.

The build quality in this car is superb. The car has no squealing noises from the dashboard or doors like MK-II Golfs or my previous Mercedes Benz 190E.

Handling isn't so nice since the 5 cylinder engine is a little bit heavy in the front, in contrast with the light rear end. (I'm stating this information based on my 90 which, sadly,is not equipped with the Quattro system) The car's rear end keeps throwing itself around if you have poor rear wheel tyres.

In conclusion, if you are looking for a decent German car that is reliable and cheap, and would go miles and miles without suffering, and can act as a family car when you drop your kids to school and turn into a sporty sedan when you are alone, then I think you should give this car a try. Or, if you are just an Audi enthusiast and freak like me, you definitely would want one, but I would recommend a 20V if you crave even more speed like me.

Oh and another thing,Quattro is a must if you wish to have a bit more fun.
