2002 Citroen Xsara HDI 2.0 turbo diesel

Summary:

Fast, cheap and reliable

Faults:

Passenger window not working. Haven't fixed it yet as quote is $1000.

Replaced stereo because CD player stopped working.

Clutch starting to feel stiff.

Nothing else.

General Comments:

A great car, attractive, fast, handles extremely well, economy is great on long trips - I get about 700km to a tank.

I have had no major problems with the car, only annoying thing is the passenger power window not working.

Exterior of the car looks great, I have it in Burgundy. Interior of the car is not so great in my opinion. The rest of the car feels so solid and things inside feel loose, one air conditioning vent has broken and general wear and tear has taken its toll on appearance. Still it all works OK, but could be better.

Performance is bloody good, the turbo is impressive, and even better in manual. As it is a diesel it can struggle in acceleration higher that 115km/h, but still gets up and goes. Sometimes with a full load it would get very hot and lose all power, although it would still maintain speed this was very annoying.

Citroen were great at looking after us, but every time there was a service they would find something that probably wasn't broken and charge us $2000. We take it to a standard mechanic from now on.

Highly recommended, a car that stands out (cause hardly anyone here has Citroen's).

2003 Citroen Xsara SX 2.0 HDi

Summary:

Reliable and cheap to run

Faults:

Nothing as yet, but new discs and pads will be required at the next service.

General Comments:

Good performance and economy from the diesel engine. We are averaging 52-55mpg in mixed motoring.

Superb ride, and the handling is good, though it rolls more than our previous model.

Paint seemed a little soft, as we have picked quite a few stone chips.

Rear visibility is not the best either, and general build quality is only average.

Overall an excellent family car with excellent reliability.

1999 Citroen Xsara VTS 2.0 Twin Cam 16v

Summary:

An absolute kick to drive

Faults:

Boot doesn't lock with central locking.

Buttons on steering wheel are faulty, causing the stereo to change stations by it's self which is rather annoying.

General Comments:

Performance is excellent, 167hp stock and can easily be modified to give over 200hp.

Steering has excelent precision, however it does tend to get knocked when going over bumps.

Brakes are good, but are very sensitive, and tend to lock up easily.

The suspension is sensational, rides like a true sports car, however on bumpy roads it does tend to crash into bumps very hard which is annoying.

When Starting the engine or shifting down a gear at high speed the exhaust rattles which is annoying.

2001 Citroen Xsara VTS 1.6 li

Summary:

I made a mistake, should have just bought a Corolla

Faults:

The first problem encountered with my Xsara was the engine management lamp. It turns on in the morning when I start the air conditioner while the engine is still cold. Then came minor problems such as the air vents on the dashboard was pushed in, pocket behind the driver seat pulled out, squeaky brakes, radio lost FM reception, and just now, the signal wand gets stuck on the right indicator especially on cold winter mornings. Crickey! All these happened with just 16,000 kms on the clock. This is my first (and last) French car. Mind you, I only experience problems with my Japanese cars when they've traveled over 100,000 km.

General Comments:

The only thing that makes me happy to own a Xsara is its ability to take on sharp corners. Handling is superb for a small hatch and it drives like a larger sedan. Its suspension is a bit hard, but I like it that way. Steering is not overly assisted and is very accurate. Its 1.6 li engine lacks flair, but is competent - a power output comparable to the Focus 1.8 li. Its fuel consumption is not exceptional. Runs on 10 li per 100km (suburb driving), just like any other 1.6 car.

I am the original writer and I'd just like to give an update on my Xsara. After all faults were fixed by the dealer, with just 15,000 km, I'm glad to say that I'm now quite happy with my Xsara, now reaching the 40K mark. The first 10K was very disappointing. I had the dealer change the indicator stalk, radiator hose, rubber door seal, CD player, and engine mount. The dealer though was very cooperative. At 10K, I also find the car too sluggish off the mark, but now it's very perky and quick for a 1.6 auto, comparable even to most 1.8's. I still like the Xsara's handling capabilities, the best for its class. Once we made a mistake of filling it with 91 ULP which caused the engine management to light up. A couple of Optimax full tanks solved the problem. I hope no more surprises to come, but then the car is already 3.5 y.o, I expect more minor faults which I guess is common even for Japanese cars.
