1984 Ford Fairmont XF 4.1L EFI inline six

Summary:

High fuel bill, low performance

Faults:

2 blown rocker cover gaskets.

Paint job in very poor condition.

Broken engine mount.

Constant problems with it not idling properly even though 3 different mechanics have tried to fix it.

Interior in very poor condition.

Minor oil leak from the head gasket.

Rust in boot lid and front guard.

Original alloy wheels very corroded.

General Comments:

It is much more sluggish than my commodore was even though it has an extra 35kw.

The power steering is very light, but can feel very dull (no feedback)

Despite its size it is very easy to manoeuvre and park.

The inside of the car is very spacious.

1984 Ford Fairmont XE 4.1 Litre Carby

Summary:

Comfy Fuel guzzling powerhouse with lots of potential

Faults:

The antenna snapped off.

Both side mirrors have cracks in them and needed to be glued together to stop them falling off.

The air conditioning doesn't work.

The accelerator cable may need to be replaced because when applying pressure to the pedal, it gets stuck and can become dangerous, especially in peak hour traffic.

General Comments:

This car is heavy, built tough, and loves to drink fuel.

Handeling is amazing with power steering and some fat tyres. Lowering the car would do wonders for performance.

Acceleration throws you into the seat and you can easily spin the wheels. This car will match many later model cars off the line without worry. Not bad for a 6 cylinder.

Comfy interior, lots of leg and head room. Blue velour interior is dated, but looks great if looked after.

No tape deck, just a radio.

Starts first go, rain, hail or shine.

I paid $1,800 for the old girl and I have never looked back since.

Parts are easy to come by.

1984 Ford Fairmont Ghia 4.1 EFI

Summary:

I find these cars to be excellent although the door handles are very common to break!

Faults:

I haven't really had troubles with it, I've replaced the starter motor two months ago and fitted a four speed manual to it. It's started to make a ticking noise, I think I need to take a look at the tappets, but other than that, I haven't had any troubles. Oh hang on, the doors handles! I have replaced them a few times now!!

General Comments:

Since I have changed it to manual it is a lot quicker, it does chew a little more juice, but its worth it.
