Summary:

Now days it makes an excellent first car!

Faults:

Due to the car being hammerd by a previous owner there were various problems. The radiator needed to be fixed due to car being driven hard with low water, loose wheel baring. At the moment the CV joints r on their way, but whats to expect with 325,000+ kms and the cars had a hard life. Aside that the car runs amazingly well.

The problems were only due to the car being treated like the racing car it isn't.

General Comments:

Most of the above problems were fixed and the car runs like new, its amazing on petrol and cheap to run in general. Can be gutless when coming up hills, but that's nothing. I use it almost everyday and around $40 fills the tank and that will last a lot longer than an average V6 sedan. It's a five speed manual, the gears change very nicely and the clutch has a good amount of free-play so you don't need to push it right to the floor to change gears. This also makes slow moves like reverse parralel parking and that easy to do without stalling. The heater is amazing, I've never felt a heater so nice and warm in a car before, in fact after having it on for only 5 minutes you feel too hot and need to turn it off for a while.

No power steering makes turning in tight spaces a little bit hard, over all the car is a great car if you want something to run about the city in.

Bad things besides not having power steering would be the seats, they're a bit hard, but do the job for a short trip.

The car isn't designed as a high performance car so it doesn't like being thrashed.

My father just bought me a 1989 Ford Laser KE

The muffler had to be replaced; the owner before me I guess tried to jump gutters and cracked it.

The gasket was leaking; we have to get a new seal for it, nothing too major, just went to the wreckers, you will find Lasers there always, they're such a popular car. I never noticed how many are actually on the road until I got one.

I've been looking for another mirror; having only one annoys me. The dashboard's all cracked from the sun; we have a mat over it now.

It's my learning car and I think it's going to be a great learner car.

Would it be capable for long distance driving? I was a little worried it will break down in the middle of the trip. My Laser has driven 210000km BTW. Please advise me.

Summary:

Nice tidy car

Faults:

Brakes had gone spongy, bled the system, fixed rear drum adjuster. I think it maybe slave cylinder problem. The seats worn and paint has faded. Burns a lot of oil and/or leaks it as well. I crashed it and had to fix the front end, but Giha parts are hard to find.

General Comments:

The car has some go, but the clutch is worn and slips badly and won't grab if I put the revs up and drop the clutch. I like the cabin; its plush and comfy, but the exterior gets rough with rust and general wear.

Summary:

Reliable run about

Faults:

Recored the radiator.

Replaced rear brake calipers.

Replaced hand brake cable after too many handbrake slides!

General Comments:

Bought this car as a cheap run-about for my university years, but still have it three years after graduation.

It starts first time every time and apart from the things listed above, all I've done is replace the oil and filter every 10,000kms and treated it to a new air filter and a set of spark plugs. The engine is noisy, rattles and doesn't idle well until it's properly warm, but it doesn't burn or drip oil and always starts first time. There's nothing more you want from an engine that's done 225,000kms. The seats have completely worn out and not having power steering is a hassle.

In general, it's reliable, relatively economical and has reasonable enough power.
