1990 Ford Laser Ghia 1.8 16v petrol

Summary:

Reliable, predictable, comfortable

Faults:

Alternator voltage regulator failed, cost $28 in 1994.

Drive shafts began rattling at about 100,000km, replaced about a year later.

The passenger door lock did not always lock itself for about 18 months in 1994-5, but it got better by itself, never looked at it.

Air-conditioner condenser failed in about 2001, before and since then the AC has always worked fine.

General Comments:

The alternator failing is the only time this car has let me down. The only other times it's not started is when the battery has died completely. It's on the third battery, the first two lasted 6 and 5 years.

It's not really quick acceleration-wise, but cruises well on highways and is not bad at overtaking when you make it kick down and rev hard. The 4 speed auto is reasonably good.

I have had 600km from the 45 litre tank, over 500 is easy in country driving. Doing many short trips around town you're lucky to get 400km.

Handling is comfortable rather than sporty. Brakes are not really too fantastic, descending a mountain they almost died, my one fright in this car, engine braking is not very effective due to the high gearing.

Good radio too, good reception, the 4-speaker joystick control is nifty.

I wrote the above, I still own the above car, now 16 years old and in family since new. It has rarely been garaged. The only rust spots are near rear bumper where it was reversed into a tree (not by me) and more seriously, around the windscreen. The windscreen has been replaced twice and I believe the paintwork was probably damaged and has allowed the rust to get in. The interior still looks reasonably good, much better than most cars that have sat outside in the sun for 16 years. There are a few squeaking noises under the engine bay, I think the engine also leaks a small amount of oil (it doesn't drop any on ground), but there is a burning smell after driving a while. Mostly it does short trips, my theory is the oil doesn't get hot enough to burn on short trips, builds up, then smells after a longer trip. The drive-shaft joints were replaced a few years ago, the rubber covers failed, then a clunking noise became worse.

1990 Ford Laser GL 1.6L 16v

Summary:

A long-lived, reliable, cheap running car

Faults:

Had to replace the ignition module at 220,000 km. Got worse and worse at starting on cold mornings, replaced the battery, then later it gave up starting entirely. Replacement was about NZ$200 for module (I installed myself).

Driver's seat's lost a lot of it's comfort and some light oil leaks (but what would you expect for it's experience level?)

General Comments:

Brilliantly reliable car. Turns over first time, perhaps just small issues with the fast idle.

Good power for a 1.6. The transmission is well geared for the engine, and while not a racing car, reassuring, smooth power is behind the accelerator.

Done a lot of kilometers in it now and it's still going strong. The 400km Dunedin to Christchurch trip costs below $30 in gas. A great buy.

1990 Ford Laser TX3i 1.8 non-turbo

Summary:

Excellent all round performer

Faults:

3rd gear on gearbox stripped.

General Comments:

My car, black with white 14' mags, made a perfect car for production car racing as performance was excellent for 1800cc and the car would not require much modification. It rocketed to 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds and covered the 1/4 mile in a best time of 15.4 sec at 144km/h. Everyone thought the car was a turbo due to its speed. The car has a comfortable ride and excellent road-holding, however the addition of larger wheels and tires would have generated higher cornering speeds. Excellent ecomony if trying, which was not very often.

I also have a black tx3i and still love driving it. It's non turbo but very peppy. I cannot see myself parting with it anytime soon.

1990 Ford Laser TX3 1.8 petrol

Summary:

As above

Faults:

The air conditioning has like a dead mouse or something in it and we can't seem to find it, man it stinks... but that isn't a problem with the actual car. I actually can't remember anything going wrong with it, not while we have had it anyway...

General Comments:

A really quick, reliable, economic car. Would look good with some new wheels and an EVO4 front spoiler. There is quite a bit of road noise come into the car though.
