1992 Ford Laser GL 1.6 carby

Summary:

Worth the $3000+ about to be invested

Faults:

Cooling system failure - cooked the original engine.

Second engine now leaking oil - getting replaced with a BPT 1.8 ltr manual.

Transmission previously replaced by the original owner since new (to select reserve I first need to select Park) - replacing it with a G series to suit the new BPT turbo conversion.

Outer CV boot split (OK for a 22 year old car).

Carby issues.

General Comments:

Despite all the problems I have had with this car, which are partially due to lack of maintenance, it refuses to die! I have to say it is one of the best and most reliable cars I have owned.

The car had been professionally lowered to the point that it feels like a go-kart, and the new body kit and mags I purchased make this car tough looking but reliable.

Built Ford Tough.

...by Mazda. It's a sister car to the Mazda 323/Familia/Protege.

1992 Ford Laser GL 1.6

Summary:

Great first car, love it to bits

Faults:

The previous owner only drove it to & from work; I think he may have neglected it a bit. Have had to spend a bit of cash to get it into its current shape.

The heater takes a while to heat up, & is not so great when on the head/foot setting, but the head & foot separately settings are great.

General Comments:

Got a service on the car at I think 170***, & found out the brakes were nearly gone & the air con needed re-gassing, so got the brakes replaced (dodgy job); they started failing a month later, got them fixed.

Air con got re-gassed, but a different mechanic confirmed that car had previously been hit; the air con had a massive leak. Got that fixed.

Got another part replaced (can't remember what it was).

Recently found out from family that it has serious leak, so have to use coolant daily; getting it fixed soon.

High beams don't work; getting them fixed soon.

Light on the left side of the dash works most of the time; it's just loose.

Blew a fuse, but have no idea how it happened. Got it fixed.

Low petrol light doesn't work.

Got a flat a couple of months ago, but the spare tyre worked a treat until I got a new set the next day (spares are supposed to be permanent). But I hate the jack that comes with the car.

Even with all this, I love my car.

I travel interstate on a monthly basis & never had problems; fuel economy is absolutely brilliant. But I do prefer manuals.

1992 Ford Laser GL 1.6L

Summary:

Fantastic little car

Faults:

Only thing I have encountered in the 7 months of owning the Laser, is the carpet in the passenger footwell has come off the floor. Easy fixed with mats.

General Comments:

After the trouble I encountered with my previous car, I had chosen to get something smaller. Have not been disappointed once with this car. Has been brilliant.

It has got plenty of pickup for a little engine (1.6L). The air-con works beautifully. Can't fault them.

My only regret is not buying one of these instead of the EF!

1992 Ford Laser KH 1.6

Summary:

Great all round car

Faults:

It was good when I first bought it, but it needed CV joints, but as time went on it needed maintaining, as I don't think it got it from its last owner:

Front brakes

CV joints

Fuel tank pulled down and cleaned

New radiator

Ring gear and starter motor

Timing belt

And just recently it got a gearbox service and modulator on gearbox fixes, and got a second hand carburettor

General Comments:

This is my first car, and I have owned this car for the past 2 1/2 years. It's been a good car to me, and it has never broke down!!

It did need a bit of work in the first year of having it, but I think that's down to the last owner not maintaining it!! The work it has had done on it would have been not that much, but for crappy mechanics stuffing the car up and me getting it back worse off than it was when I brought it in. This has caused me to spend more to fix the dodgy mechanic's stuff up!!!

It's excellent on fuel; it uses $30, which is half a tank in a fortnight. It's quiet and drives smooth like a new car!!! It beats my mum's Ford Laser 90 model manual all the time; it's got a lot of grunt for what it is!!!

Handles well in all weathers. and doesn't miss a beat on long trips!

All the interior is like new. The only thing I can fault it on is the paint job. It'd had a respray before I got it, and it's shoddy so it's got crows feet on the bonnet, but that's it.

All in all it's a fantastic car. I love it.
