1994 Ford Laser KH 1.6 carby

Summary:

Perfect first car!

Faults:

Fuse for cooling fan blew, overheated in an underground car park, but was a quick cheap fix!

Ignition module died while driving, RACV mechanic said they were a Mitsubishi part, and it was somewhat cheap to fix!

Gas struts died for the boot, can happen to any car; a piece of wood cut to size does the job just as well!

General Comments:

Great first car. I learnt how to drive manual in it, and have loved it ever since!

Very roomy for a small car, great handling, huge boot with a compliment of folding seats that beats most other cars in space!

Been very reliable, with next to no problems for such an old car. With going to the wreckers for parts for a friends car, I always look at the these cars, most have 300,000km on the clock, one even had 500,000km, which shocked me!

Very easy to work on, and cheap parts, and a lot of parts around since most parts are shared with the Mazda 323 of this year too!

Power is somewhat lacking, although you can't expect much from a 1.6L carby from the 90s. Still has a bit of up and go though; recorded an 0-100 time of 11.9 seconds!

1994 Ford Laser Liata GLX 1.8 DOHC

Summary:

High performance granny car

Faults:

Nothing has gone wrong, ever. Despite having taught three teenagers to drive.

General Comments:

Top of the line model that has survived well. A spirited performer that can still get up and go, or cruise gently all day long.

Handling not up to current standards.

At 6'2" I find the drivers set not the best for getting in or out, but it's comfortable for driving.

1994 Ford Laser KH GL 1.6 Carburettor

Summary:

It is a well built and well optioned, great looking car

Faults:

Nothing Major has gone wrong with the vehicle. Most common problem are small overheating issues, which were easily fixed. Had the water pump go about 20000km's ago. Thermostat went about 15000kms ago ($60).Pipe for coolant to run to heater got hole ($12). Radiator Cap ($15) stopped sealing properly therefore lost compression. Plugs on radiator (plastic) fell apart, replaced with copper ones ($2.50).No oil leaks, hardly uses any.

Gearbox failed on me completely, my fault as I drove it hard being my first car and did not service box.

Replaced front seats as side padding collapsed (mainly drivers seat). livable for a while, but got hold of some nice Nissan seats for nothing which fitted nicely.

Replaced CV joints about 50000 kms ago and boot about 10000kms ago. (cornering to hard)

General Comments:

For a 1.6 with a three speed auto she has go a lot of go in her.

Handles very well around corners.

Interior is simple, but nice. I have put some silver appointments on dash to modernise and sports steering wheel.

Interior roomy for small car and boot has got plenty of space considering size of vehicle.

Economy is variable. On a trip with for laser club to Ballerat and Sunshine area. I got 750kms out of a 55 liter tank. Best I ever got. Averages at about 500kms city and highway combo driving.

1994 Ford Laser GL 1.6ltr 16v Carbi

Summary:

A fast fun car to drive

Faults:

Fuse blew which caused the cooling fan to malfunction therefore causing engine to overheat mildly. Wire connection on engine block blew so communication between temperature gauge and cooling fan broke therefore another minor overheat. She is a Bit of a cold starter.

General Comments:

Car is in very good condition and goes very well, for a carburettor. Interior room is good for a relatively small car and the interior shows no sign of wear on anything. It is a quick car and has very good handling.

1994 Ford Laser KJ Liata Ghia (5dr) 1.8 petrol

Summary:

Reliable, fuss-free motoring

Faults:

Slight noise when using driver side power windows (present with previous owner)

Catalytic converter changed at 90,000 kilometres.

General Comments:

The car is OK for fuel efficiency with a figure of about 9L/100km in the city and returns about 7L/100km on the highway.

Both left hand and right hand headlight bulbs (standard beams only) went within a week of each other. What I see as an indication of good quality control of the bulbs more than anything.
