2000 Holden Astra CD 1.8 premium

Summary:

Perfect!

Faults:

Nothing really. Except I have a rattle on the left back wheel.

General Comments:

Love the shape.

It's great on fuel.

It is like a little BMW (even on the inside).

Great performer.

Since I have owned it, I have only used premium fuel & it (the car) loves it.

Can't fault it really (even with 213000kms on the clock).

2000 Holden Astra City 1.8 petrol

Summary:

Nice interior and body, but reliability as a secondhand car, not so good

Faults:

No compression in number 3 cylinder due to part of the valve missing at 145 000 km. Had top end of engine reconditioned, timing belt replaced while it was off.

Fuel gauge needle sticks sometimes or does not work at all.

Water leaks onto drivers foot well when the aircon is used (this causes a smell in the car).

General Comments:

I have had this car for nearly 1 year, and as a secondhand purchase, I wish I bought a Corolla.

But the thing that attracted me to this car was the nice interior and digital display of the radio, time and date. The interior seemed more up market compared to other cars, and I also like the shape of them.

2000 Holden Astra CD 1.8

Summary:

A great car to drive and own

Faults:

Common problem seems to be the rear window regulators, the keyless entry and sensor, although over the 6 years I have owned the car, I have only had to fix them once, and never before 100,000km's.

General Comments:

This car has been great. I have seen a lot of bad reviews on this car, but it only makes me wonder about the mechanics they are being taken too.

I would jump in this car and travel to Queensland, and know that it will be OK.

I would recommend this car to anyone. My advice is to take into account that the car must be serviced when required, and to change the oil every 5,000km's, as this benefits any vehicle and minimises the risks of things breaking.

I think that people also need to understand that because it is a European based car, that it will be slightly more expensive to fix.

I bought my second hand Astra CD 2001 in February this year at 140,000km, and have just been advised by a Holden dealership that my computer and throttle body need replacing.

They've said there's no use replacing the computer without replacing the throttle body too, as the current one would destroy the new computer.

They have quoted me $2,500 for parts and labour! I am currently calling around some other Canberra mechanics to see if I am being ripped off. I know Astra's can be an expensive car to maintain, but this amount seems pretty excessive.

I will re-post once I get a response back, as I've heard these problems can be common in Astra's.

Cheers.

Jen.

Yup. you're right, Holden is not good, I have had the same problem since I bought it... rear window not working, problem with all the sensors, ABS light and speedometer light were playing up... I don't know what else... long list... prefer not to buy... that's good advice.
