1986 Honda Prelude

Summary:

Fast, handsome, but EXPENSIVE to maintain

Faults:

EVERYTHING!

I purchased the car at 210,000 and have not thrashed it, and to this day have spent close to 10k on it. I purchased it for 3k AUD, and 3 months later needed to re condition my alternator after 3 break downs. Then a timing belt snapped, and finally the killer, I blew the head and the radiator formed a crack in it.

General Comments:

Although all these things went wrong.. the car has its definite strong points. it is a fast 4, and for its age, it does kill other cars in its weight class.

I have fitted custom extractors, and it sounds like it's ready for the dirt track!

In the way of comfort, it is fantastic; the stock bucket seats hug the body and provide great lumbar support.

It has been good to me, and for that I thank it, but I am now ready to move on and leave the Prelude behind.

1986 Honda Prelude Si 2.0 petrol

Summary:

Great fun car if you can afford the parts

Faults:

Oxygen sensor failed.

ABS light turns on in the rain. Suggesting water seepage into braking system evident when in the wet.

Automatic gear box reconditioned at 210000 Km.

Water pump failed at about 240000 Km.

Power steering wheel rack replaced twice. Once at 220000 and then again at 230000, which was just outside the warranty time. After that the rack failed again at 250000, this time I did not replace it, instead I topped it up with fluid.

Serious rust around rear window Sills, requiring approximately $1500 (AU$) to fixed. This was not fixed.

Rust around the sunroof area.

General Comments:

When I first bought this vehicle, it had 172000 km on the Odometer. The car drove fantastic, having sensational handling, low ride and excellent seat comfort. Even though the power output was reasonable, the car was light and handled well, meant that the car could get out of tight spots.

Advantages

Excellent seats, unlike some cars, this has good lumbar support.

Fair to good acceleration.

Light and nimble. Got out of accidents.

Excellent visibility through all windows.

Large side mirrors. Having large side mirrors meant that you could "flip the mirrors out" to capture the drivers blind spot in the left side mirror (Right hand drive vehicle).

Disadvantages

This model Automatic was not made for tough driving, I had to replace the automatic transmission within a year of driving. I converted the vehicle to a manual gear box. Never had a problem with it since.

You have to be careful with the water flow along the rear window sills. Any clogging due to dirt or mud would stop water from leaving the window sill area. This caused rust.

Honda parts are expensive, and substitute parts are not much better.

You have to be an athlete to get in and out of the car. Especially the rear seats.

1986 Honda Prelude Si 2.0 EFI DOHC

Summary:

"Was" a great car!

Faults:

Rear brake was jammed on.

Heating hose had hole - cheap repair.

Rear seat belt latches fell apart (yes two of them)

Semi bad rust around the back window sill.

Really bad tyre wear for about a year now. Even after alignment.

Drivers seat came apart from where its attached to the floor.

Oh yeah how did I almost forget the steering rack (bushes??) are and have been making a terrible squeaking noise now for a long time.

General Comments:

Well due to the steering rack noise its home to be is the wreckers, I just can't be bothered with it any more.

All though I must admit it pulled faster than a school boy! I had many a race in it and bet many things from Turbo Familia to Turbo Subaru's (damn spelling)

When I did get it I must admit it handled REALLY well and was a great bargain.

1986 Honda Prelude 2.0 Si 2.0 twin cam fuel injected

Summary:

A cheap, fast and reliable car that is also very comfortable

Faults:

Absolutely nothing. Although there are little things like maybe an interior light not working or something minor like that.

General Comments:

This car is really great. It handles extremely well, absolutely no body roll what so ever. I have fitted sports springs, but they really didn't improve the handling, they just allowed the car to sit lower. This car is very quick! It has been to 220 km/h before.
