1998 Jaguar XJR 4.0L Supercharged

Summary:

Power, luxury and handling

Faults:

Had a fair few suspension problems at 60,000 km- had to replaced the wheel bearings and various suspension bushes.

Radiator hose off the thermostat split, at the same time also found two other lower hoses were in need of replacement.

Tyres seem to last only 20,000 km. Trying an alternate brand.

General Comments:

This car has the best Jaguar interior to date- a superb flowing dashboard in maple walnut, fitting in well with the central instrument console. Leather seats and carpets have stood up to the wear well and still look like new when treated. Analogue dials for rev counter and speedo suit the ambiance.

All the electrics work well- minimal extra "gadgets", but all the expected gear- climate control, CD stacker, quality sound system.

A seriously quick car- recently managed a 13.9 second / 105 mph quarter mile. The handling is excellent- good enough to take on most other cars on the winding roads of New Zealand. Wide tyres give plenty of grip, and the traction control intervenes well to prevent the rear swinging out if you are taking the corner too fast.

Only complaint is that the boot is cosy- can be forgiven given the looks of the car.

Note that you have owned the car since '04. Would love to know how much avg servicing costs have been. Maintenance aside, there is no doubt that these Jags represent value buying at the moment.

1995 Jaguar XJR 4.0 supercharged six cylinder

Summary:

Unsurpassed comfort, performance and street cred

Faults:

Routine maintenance only, most things fixed under warranty by the dealer. The dealer has given excellent service. For example the electric seat fault, rear axle bearing and engine management computer replaced (after the warranty expired); but all were fairly routine faults.

General Comments:

Build quality is first class and there are no rattles in the interior. The car drives as well as new and outperforms most cars on the road in looks and performance (which is formidable and absolutely outstanding). It will blow the door handles off most V8 hi-po pretenders and also my MY01 WRX and twin turbo Toyota Soarer, both of which are superb motorcars.

The XJR is the best car I have ever owned. Passengers in it marvel at its ride, comfort and performance. Whilst costly to buy initially, it has been a bargain and heaps of fun.

My husband has a P registration Jaguar Supercharger and it is his pride and joy. However, ever since we purchased it, it has had an intermittent fault which is gradually getting worse. It stalls for no apparent reason and this can happen all the way through a drive, or just the once and then be fine. There are also days when it does not stall at all. We have had the garage look at it several times, clean the system throughout, replaced the E.C.U. (because this showed no faults and was then found to be faulty), had a major service done although not due, but nothing clears this fault. We now have another fault that intermittently happens - the gear box warning light comes up and the gear ‘kicks’. We have taken it to the garage with the warning light on and had the computer checked, but it shows no fault. If you switch the car off and then back on, the warning light goes out. Have you heard of these faults?

Possible gearbox ecu fault? or one of the other related sensors (like Park switch in gear shift assy)?

Throttle position sensor inside the throttle body causes this fault.

Actually this sounds like a problem on some XJ40s. Heat and pressure build up in the fuel tank and collapse the fuel line. After it sits a minute or two it returns to normal. Loosening the gas cap can stop the problem.
