1985 Mitsubishi Magna GLX 2.6 Astron

Summary:

TM Magna is sensible and affordable with suprisingly confident road handling

Faults:

Replaced radiator at 60000 km.

The Voltage Regulator died and the car stopped dead at 58000 km and a long way from home.

The plastic center console is broken.

This is strange, but when the temperature selector (air vents) is on cold and you select first gear, you hear this weird clicking noise in the firewall.

Sometimes you need to double clutch to be able to select reverse.

Drivers seat belt stalk stuck while I was in it. I had to unscrew console then the stalk to get out.

Clutch reservoir cap seal rubber broke.

Windscreen seal needs replacing to reduce wind noise >90 km/h.

General Comments:

The paint work is excellent (super shiny) on this car considering it only gets washed a few times a year.

The 4 wheel disk brakes provide excellent stopping power at high and low speeds.

Powerful, quick and super smooth acceleration from 80 to 110 km/h.

At 110 - 150 km/h the car always feels stable and in control no matter what the road or conditions.

I believe one of this model's best assets is how well it drives at higher speeds.

Very comfortable, big seats for driver and passengers.

Economy is good for engine designed in 1980's. 100km / 12litres.

Impressive effort by Mitsubishi to reduce road / engine noise.

A very quiet ride.

1985 Mitsubishi Magna Astron II 2.6

Summary:

The car is a bargain for what it's worth

Faults:

Rust on the rear right of the roof.

Exhaust leak from front exhaust line.

Rear right tire wears badly.

General Comments:

The car is a sweet ride if you put the time and care into it.

As a P plater I have to make it look good and sound good.

I've got some pumping Pioneer 7x10's and 6x9's, including a pioneer deck and amplifier,1000w sub.

The car can take anything you put into it, including my 4" exhaust and 1996 4 cyl skyline engine into it, changed from auto to manual, and fitted with an awesome skyline gearbox.

Enjoy.

1985 Mitsubishi Magna TM 2.6

Summary:

A reliable, but uneconomical drive

Faults:

Auto electrical problems.

Roof lining is falling in.

Rust under front indicators.

Head has been reconditioned twice.

General Comments:

This thing, once warmed up flies and really sounds smooth, but it guzzles the petrol.

I am thinking about putting a turbo and exhuast system on it, but that's the future.

1985 Mitsubishi Magna SE 2.6Litre

Summary:

A cheap car that has been reliable to date and hasn't blown up.

Faults:

Lack of power when first purchased. This was the result of the carburetor being dirty and poor vacuum, the secondary jet wouldn't open. I was billed $70 to repair by a crap mechanic, the problem reoccurred a week later and I laid down 200 for it to be fixed properly.

The radiator broke from its housing.

Sun visor on drivers side broke because it was jammed.

Starter motor died without signs of problems and needed replacement.

Had to replace a CV joint at 23600km.

Alternator started to make squealing sounds when changing down a gear although a prod on the go pedal usually fixes this. This might be caused because of excessive strain on the battery? I have a 12 inch 800watt pioneer sub and amp which pumps pretty hard.

General Comments:

This has been my second car and as a P plater it has served me well. Its performance is heavily lacking although it easily blows away idiots in Geminis at the lights, much to their surprise.

When there is a carload the car drives like a slug unless you push it.

Being a male driver the magna is thrashed day in and day out, usually gear changes are between 4000-5000 rpm and can reach a speeds around 170km/h surprising quickly.

The driving tire (right hand front) gets bald very quickly when doing rollbacks as the Magna has potential to spin for 30 seconds on the road smoking it up unbelievably.
