1985 Mitsubishi Sigma GL Wagon 2.6L Astron II 3speed

Summary:

Tough, Powerful, Roomy, Easy to drive

Faults:

The car hadn't been driven for 5 years when I bought it so it was towed to a mechanic who oiled it and started it.

It needed the radiator blown out because it was blocked due to lack of use.

Got new valve stem seals to stop smoke.

General Comments:

It's my first car and it's brilliant. It was owned by an old bloke who hardly drove it, and it had only done 42,000 km. 10,000km was done on a trip to QLD.

It's very reliable and powerful even with a full compliment of passengers and luggage uphill, but it can drink a bit (13L per 100km) even if driven gently.

The interior is immaculate as is the paint, despite a couple of specks of superficial rust, it's really shiny and looks new. It was garaged all its life and so the bumpers are not at all faded.

It's very comfortable and the ventilation and air conditioning is brilliant... better than mum's brand new magna!!

Very good space utilisation with more rear seat space than a magna and a huge boot (it's a wagon)

Good handling and comfy ride from original suspension. This car is absolutely original, not even an air con regas or new boot struts!!

Steering is light and responsive on the road even with out power steer, but a tad heavy when parking.

1985 Mitsubishi Sigma G.N. 2.6 turbo

Summary:

Sleeper. Surprised a few people

Faults:

Very good example of GN Sigma

Very little rust. None around windscreen (unusual)

Interior like new.

General Comments:

Fitted a factory turbo so the car is fun to drive.

Steering is low geared. Will be better with P/S (soon)

Bought it for $700.00 and has become a "project".

Have to treat it with respect as the transmission and diff are borderline (strength)

1985 Mitsubishi Sigma GLX 2.0

Summary:

Rust resistant, death defeating, long lasting runner for caring hands

Faults:

The engine burns a lot of oil and leaks a bit

The choke gets stuck about every 1000km and needs readjusting. If not adjusted the car won't start when the engine's warm.

The water pump leaks (2 bottles of "stopleak" saved me a $400 repair here!)

Alternator worn: battery doesn't recharge properly. This causes complete breakdown when using multiple devices at the same time (i.e.: radio, lights, wipers, heater) for several hours

Rear wheel bearings are very loud

Gear box bearing worn: very loud and it's harder to get the gears in

The windshield seals were worn when I bought the car and it needed to be resealed with silicon to stop the on-foot waterfalls during rain.

The driver seat is pretty worn.

General Comments:

Even though the list of "things that went wrong with the car" is pretty long, my Sigma has been more reliable than expected for an 18 year old car.

Runs absolutely fine with a bit of maintenance - regular oil and water checks for example and some stop leak.

The space is fantastic: big enough for two people to comfortably sleep in the back, or 5 people to drive only moderately squashed around.

Even though it's only got 2 wheel drive, it is amazingly off-road compatible.

However the lights are very dim (especially the reverse light) and the car is very common to be broken into!

Repairs are common, but usually easily and cheaply to be fixed.

Never had problems getting a warranty of fitness.

1985 Mitsubishi Sigma GN 2.6 Astron

Summary:

Must have been a great car in 85

Faults:

Even though it was rust proofed from new, It cost me $1100 to have the rust cut out.

Ring gear had a flat spot. Had it turned around.

Actually this is a very fine example of a 85 wagon. The interior is like new and everything works. I fitted Starion mags to keep it all Mitsubishi

General Comments:

Bought it as a bit of a "project car"???

It is a pig to steer without power steer.

Can't believe how narrow the body is. Have to drive it with the window down and my arm out the window to get comfortable.

Still it is nice to drive. I only use it to go on a bit of a cruise now and then.

1985 Mitsubishi Sigma GK SE 2.6 SOHC

Summary:

Has potential to be a great performance car

Faults:

Nothing major. Engine has only done 25 000km since it was rebuilt.

Hoses, leads, spark plugs etc. have been replaced.

Ball joints, Shock absorbers, and struts were replaced.

General Comments:

The engine has good torque, but lacks power.

Power gets better with high revs. (Better off with manual transmission)

I have recently fitted extractors and a two and a quarter inch exhaust system.

Next I plan to fit twin 45mL side draft weber's to the engine, and raise the compression ratio.

The car has been re-sprayed bright yellow and a GSR rear spoiler has been added.
