2005 Nissan X-Trail Ti-L 2.5 petrol

Summary:

Practical, reliable, good for a soft roader, get the manual not the auto

Faults:

Slight oil leak in transfer case (not worth fixing yet).

Buckled wheel (nothing to do with Nissan, it was the previous owner...)

General Comments:

For a car that is five years old, it has aged very well.

It is very comfortable, with decent features for the price.

In my opinion, the auto transmission lets it down - it is harsh, slow to respond, and is no good for anyone who drives like they are in a hurry, and stomps on the accelerator from time to time - if I was buying again, I would most certainly get a manual.

It burns a little more fuel than I would have hoped - probably about 14-15 litres/100kms, but then again I drive with purpose...

2006 Nissan X-Trail TI-L 2.5 petrol

Summary:

Well thought out package

Faults:

Been reliable apart from its hard on tyres.

General Comments:

Although I have been happy with the vehicle itself, trying to deal with Nissan is a brick wall; poor customer service is standard with them, and after reading all the complaints about the Navaras and Patrols, and their response, my next car (in approx 12 months) will now be a Subaru.

2006 Nissan X-Trail ST-S 2.4 petrol

Summary:

Highly recommend for couples or small family without expensive running costs

Faults:

Main issue is the cruise control keeps switching off when the car over-heats. This happens probably once out of about every 5 times we use it. When this happens, it's usually after using the cruise for about 1.5 hours, and once the cruise switches off, it cannot be switched back on for the rest of the day. We asked to dealership to look into this several times when the car was serviced, but they could not help. It's annoying, but does not affect the general everyday use of the car.

General Comments:

This car was suitable for us when we first purchased it as a couple with no kids, & now as a family with two under 2-yrs, it's equally as suitable. Although we have had to buy a pod to accommodate all our baby stuff (porta cot, high chair... etc) when we go on holidays.

Handles well in wet whether, and fuel economy is quite good considering the 4WD component. We travel mainly on city roads & occasionally (once every 3-4 months) interstate on highways, and using 4WD mode whenever Melbourne skies rain. With this usage pattern, we average 10.5 Ltr/ 100km.

Dash is boring and dated compared too many cars built at the same time, it's fairly 'no frills'.

In the time we've had this car, it's been to the snow about a dozen times, & handles very well without chains. Also the fact that it has no interior fabric is great when loading in wet/dirty boots, snowboards or even large awkward items like high chairs & prams will not tear or dirty any fabric/carpet as it would in other cars.

Would recommend purchasing the rubber tray from dealership, as this has contained a lot of the dirt from everyday use.

The cruise control keeps switching off whenever it over-heats? You might want to get the over-heating checked out before you worry about the cruise control, which is the least of your problems when your head gasket blows.

2006 Nissan X-Trail ST-S 2.4 petrol

Summary:

Great car, would recommend buy second hand, not new, and monitor service costs

Faults:

Minor issues, squeaks and rattles, rough idle when drive engaged while stopped.

General Comments:

This car is very good, however dealer service is expensive. For example, over $500 for a 40,000K service. And the service is every 10,000k.

Also the dealers seems unable to repair the rattling sunroof or squeaking rear suspension (1 dealer moved on).

The fuel economy is very good at 10 liters per 100km average. Does not seem to matter whether city of highway driving, 600 km on a 60 liter tank is always achievable.

There is an issue where the idling is rough if left in Drive when stopped at lights.

I think Nissan make a great car for the money, very high tech and very reliable, but they just don't have a suitable service support infrastructure, here in Brisbane Australia anyway.

For this reason I will not be purchasing another Nissan.
